Mets to decline Jon Niese' option. Will make QO to Walker, decline one to Cespedes.

    From MLBTR's Top 50 FAs.

Hammel would be a VERY long stretch at 3 years as Braves are looking to add 2 starters on short term contracts(1-2 years). RA Dickey was mentioned later on in the list. At 43 years old, he is also a long stretch.

    15. Jason Hammel – Braves. Three years, $42MM. Hammel, 34, was the surprise beneficiary of the Cubs’ decision to decline his $12MM club option for 2017. According to a statement from Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein, the parties had a verbal agreement that the team would not exercise his option and then trade him, and the World Champs are seeking a younger, controllable fifth starter. Hammel has been a steady presence for the Cubs over the last two seasons, posting a 3.79 ERA, 8.4 K/9, 2.5 BB/9, and 1.28 HR/9 in 61 starts. He’s a flyball pitcher, and his strikeout and walk rates did move a bit in the wrong direction this year, but Hammel is still easily one of the best free agent starting pitchers. Though Hammel experienced elbow tightness in September, Epstein mentioned in his statement that the righty is healthy. Unlike Hellickson, Hammel did not receive a qualifying offer, so the team that signs him will not have to surrender a draft pick. Possible suitors include the Braves, Astros, Angels, Dodgers, Marlins, Phillies, Yankees, Mariners, and Rangers.

    16. Matt Wieters – Braves. Three years, $39MM. Wieters returned from Tommy John surgery in 2015. After a limited season for the Orioles that year, he was compelled to accept the club’s $15.8MM qualifying offer in an attempt to rebuild value. While Wieters re-established his health by starting 111 games at catcher, the switch-hitting former first-round pick had another mediocre year with the bat despite ranking eighth among full-time catchers with 17 home runs. Still, he doesn’t turn 31 until May, and will likely be seeking a four-year contract. The Orioles chose not to stick Wieters with a qualifying offer this time around, but could still have interest in a new deal. If the O’s don’t retain their longtime catcher, the Braves, White Sox, Rockies, Astros, Angels, Twins and Nationals are possible fits.

    From AJC ---

    http://www.ajc.com/sports/baseball/b...60ib9TR1KGafO/

Word got out Tuesday that the Braves talked to the Tampa Bay Rays about Chris Archer, a 2015 All-Star who has three years left on a club-friendly contract plus two team-option seasons beyond that. Coppolella wondered how that information got leaked when Archer was one of many pitchers they’ve discussed on the free-agent and trade markets since the meetings began Monday.

“He is really good, and the Rays are lucky to have him. But so are a number of other pitchers that may or may not be available in trade. It’s curious to me why that name was leaked but so many others were not.”

Archer turned 28 and had 233 strikeouts in 201 1/3 innings in 2016, albeit with a career-worst 4.02 ERA and 30 home runs allowed. In 2015, the right-hander had a 3.23 ERA with 252 strikeouts in 212 innings.

I can finally post! Been trying for 2 weeks but would get to the screen and couldn't click a topic. Something weird on my end for sure. But I am back and here and ready to go!

Little surprised we signed both of them. I thought 1 was a decent chance. But guess thus shows they have confidence in the wave of pitchers coming to not block them. And next year is a better year for FA as well if they want to dole out a longer term deal.

All for now but now that I can post again and work is hitting the lighter portion...let's look forward to 17 and all it has to offer!

Walden back with Braves on MiLB deal

The Braves have announced that they’ve signed righty Jordan Walden to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training. He will receive $1M if he’s in the Majors, plus a possible $2MM in incentives, SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo tweets.

Kind of surprised by Walden. I know it isn't a guarantee but figured with JJ back we wouldn't really look fir another vet. Got a lot of kids that could step into roles depending on heakth, etc.

Always good to have options though

Braves still hot on the trail of Sale from Pale Hose.

    From AJC

They’ve had talks with teams about trading for still another starter, most notably Sale, 27, a native of Lakeland, Fla. The five-time All-Star left-hander is under contractual control for three more seasons at below-market rates — $38 million total in that three-year span including two option years — and has finished in the top five of the American League Cy Young Award balloting for four consecutive seasons after finishing sixth in his first season as a starter in 2012.

The Braves have also inquired about the Rays’ Chris Archer and Athletics’ Sonny Gray, but Sale is their focus, a person familiar with the situation said.

The price for Sale could be enormous, likely a package including multiple top prospects. The Braves have said they’re not at a point in their rebuild where they’re ready to trade top prospects to fill in gaps, but to get an ace they seem at least willing to consider changing that plan.

    Braves add another catcher

The Braves have acquired catcher Tuffy Gosewisch from the Diamondbacks, the MiLB Roster Tracker Twitter account first reported (Twitter link). Specifically, he was claimed off waivers, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation tweets.
    [RELATED: Braves Depth Chart]
With the move, Atlanta picks up another depth piece for its catching core. Tyler Flowers currently stands as the top option behind the dish, with Anthony Recker seemingly next in line following a solid 2016 season. Both Recker and Gosewisch are controllable through arbitration, with projected salaries of $1MM and $600, respectively. All three catchers hit from the right side.
Of course, the Braves have been widely tabbed as a pursuer of catching talent this winter, with free agent Jason Castro among the possible targets connected with the organization. Adding Gosewisch hardly commits the team to an alternative course — indeed, it doesn’t even mean he’ll necessarily be tendered — but it does impact the overall picture somewhat. It’s possible, for instance, that his addition could pave the way for Recker to be dealt elsewhere.

Talk about Sale coming to Atlanta continue

    • Though the Braves have been connected to several top young starters, their focus is on trying to work a deal with the White Sox for Chris Sale, according to David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. It’s still unclear just how hard Atlanta will push to pry him loose, and certainly Chicago isn’t in a position where it needs to move its affordable, excellent, and still-youthful ace. And as O’Brien notes, the Braves have signaled previously that they aren’t interested in emptying their farm to move toward contention — though there may be an added willingness to give up some premium assets in this case, as would certainly be necessary to get something done.

The Braves added another recent first-round pick Monday when they traded minor league pitchers Rob Whalen and Max Povse to the Seattle Mariners for outfield prospect Alex Jackson, who’ll be 21 on Christmas Day and might possibly get a fresh start as a catcher.

To make room for these 2 on their 40 man roster, the Mariners DFA'd Ryan Weber who they claimed off waiver from the Braves a short time back.

    From MLBTR

The Braves are still looking at trading for an ace even after adding Bartolo Colon, R.A. Dickey and Jaime Garcia to their rotation this winter and are specifically focused on White Sox lefty Chris Sale and Rays right-hander Chris Archer, per ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick (allTwitterlinks). The Braves prefer Sale to Archer despite the potentially higher asking price and shorter amount of club control remaining on his contract, Crasnick adds. Atlanta is receiving quite a bit of interest in top prospect Ozzie Albies (in general and not specifically from the White Sox or Rays), Crasnick adds, but they’re expressing a good deal of reluctance to part with him. The Braves don’t seem especially enamored of Athletics right-hander Sonny Gray on the heels of a down season in 2016, according to Crasnick.
