Default Trade em All: Phillies 2012 Trade Deadline Thread

Figured we're about to hit July, so we might as well start this baby up.

As the Phillies look for a place to move Jim Thome, the Rays and Yankees not interested, sources tell Buster Olney of ESPN.com (via Twitter). Olney speculates (Twitter link) that the Orioles and Rangers could be solid fits for the veteran.

The Marlins are telling rival teams they havenít discussed becoming sellers this summer. The Phillies also seem to want to add, not subtract. The Phils are considering a long list of relievers and have asked the Padres about Chase Headley.

    Via MLBTR:

2:30 pm: The Phillies' asking price for Hamels is said to be a package of four to five prospects, tweets Buster Olney of ESPN.com. Olney adds rival executives believe such a package could be hard to come by with the new rule preventing teams from offering arbitration to potential free agents acquired in trade (via Twitter).

Ask for ridiculous haul... then unload for whatever you can get at the last minute.

Yep, RAJ learned from the best!

    Likely to be traded:

    Shane Victorino, OF
The Phillies are so far apart in their negotiations with Victorino that it is a given he will test the free-agent market in the fall. Therefore, Philadelphia likely will move him by the July 31 trade deadline. The Los Angeles Dodgers have legitimate arms in Double-A and can afford to move one of them in a Victorino deal. An outfield of Andre Ethier, Matt Kemp and Victorino would give the Dodgers a big offensive bump that could help keep them in contention through September. Cincinnati is a dark horse as well.

Now that we know Galvis can't hit even when he's cheating, we need J-Roll at SS for the foreseeable future.

Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com writes that the Texas Rangers are in search of a No. 1 starter to anchor their rotation, with their focus first on lefthander Cole Hamels of the Philadelphia Phillies and then on righthander Zack Greinke of the Milwaukee Brewers.

But if they strike out with both, sources tell Knobler that the Rangers would consider a reunion with lefthander Cliff Lee, who spurned Texas when the team acquired him in the middle of the 2010 season, choosing instead to return to Philadelphia as a free agent.

Knobler points out that there are significant hurdles to getting a deal done, not least of which is that Lee is due $25 million in each of the next three seasons, with a $12.5 million buyout for 2016. Moreover, if the Phillies decide not to sell, that would take both Hamels and Lee off the table.

They really really need to think about Pence.

Think about what? Signing him to an extension? Because trading him would be a real "blow it up" move, instead of just selling to re-tool for 2013. If you trade Pence, you're basically stuck with having to re-sign Victorino.

Not one but 2 Texas Rangers starters (Oswalt & Colby Lewis) may wind up on the DL this week.

It depends on who you would get in a trade

You've recently pointed out how well guys like Pierre (.305 avg) and Nix (.333) have done...

It doesn't seem too difficult to find adequate outfielders.

We should totally count on Nix, who has started 14 games all season, to continue hitting for a higher average than his career OBP. We should have signed him to extension before he came back from the DL. We're just risking losing him to free agency now.

Way to miss the point... again.

The Philadelphia Phillies aren't sure yet whether they will trade away valuable veteran pieces or try to climb back in the Wildcard hunt as they get healthy. If they sell, right fielder Hunter Pence could draw a lot of interest.

ESPN.com's Jayson Stark writes Friday that Pence is drawing heavy interest and could be the Phillies' most attractive piece outside of left-hander Cole Hamels. Stark adds that "the Phillies won't determine whether they're ready to unload until after their six-game homestand that begins Friday. But if they opt to sell, Pence might represent their most difficult call."

The reason it's such a tough call? The Phillies outfield also consists of Shane Victorino, a free agent at season's end, and if they trade Pence and Victorino, or Victorino simply signs elsewhere after the season, the club will be looking for as many as three outfielders this winter.

Stark mentions the Pirates as one potentially-interested club should Pence, not a free agent until after 2013, become available this month. Other possibilities include the Dodgers, Indians, Rangers and Tigers.

    This part pisses me off.

IMO, you have to be a fool to think the team has a realistic chance at the wildcard.
Ruben is wasting time which could really hurt the haul when he finally concludes this season is over.
