Packers beat reporter Dylan B. Tomlinson (dtomlinson@<hidden>) is filling in for Rob Demovsky (rdemovsk@<hidden>) this week, while Demovsky covers the PGA tournament near Kohler.
Who’s hot
While rookie cornerback Ahmad Carroll has been a bit of a disappointment, he made one of his best plays of train¬ing camp during Tuesday afternoon’s practice when he leapt over the back of receiver Antonio Chatman and knocked the ball away. … Receiver Reggie Love, whom the Packers signed earlier this week, has made several impressive catches. At 6-foot-4, Love is the tallest of the receivers on the roster. … Rookie defensive back Joey Thomas returned to practice and placed an impressive hit on receiver Shockmain Davis during team drills in the afternoon. During the afternoon practice, Thomas and Michael Hawthorne worked with the first-team defense, while Carroll worked with the second team.
Who’s not
Defensive tackle Cletidus Hunt spent the morning conditioning while the rest of the team practiced. While the coaches have said they’ve been pleased with the way Hunt has played so far in camp, they clearly think he needs to get into better shape. … Backup center Grey Ruegamer was run over by nose tackle Grady Jackson during team drills. … After looking impressive early in camp, running back Dahrran Diedrick appeared to be struggling during some of the team drills. … The defensive backs continue to take their turns on the injured list. Seven have missed practice time during training camp due to minor injuries.
Odds and ends
Coach Mike Sherman cut short the morning’s practice after just 45 minutes so the players could attend the annual “Welcome Back” luncheon. The Packers were scheduled to practice in shorts during the morning and in full pads during the afternoon, but Sherman opted to have the players in shorts for both practices. … With Brett Favre being held out of practice to rest, Tim Couch was the quarterback for the first team during team drills.
Injury report
Thomas, who had missed several practices because of a bone bruise, returned to practice. Receiver Javon Walker, who injured a quadriceps in Saturday’s scrimmage, also returned to practice. Linebacker Hannibal Navies returned to practice after injuring a forearm during Monday night’s practice. Defensive end Corey Williams missed practice with a sprained tendon in a thumb. Defensive back Al Harris missed practice due to a hip injury.
The following players didn’t participate in Tuesday’s practices: Defensive tackle Donnell Washington (foot), defensive ends Chukie Nwokorie (knee) and Ja’Dae McGuire (abdominal strain), offensive tackle Brennan Curtin (boil), guard Mike Wahle (knee bruise), centers Mike Flanagan (knee tendinitis) and Scott Wells (biceps tendinitis), defensive backs James Whitley (head), Chris Watson (hamstring) and Chris Johnson (leg), linebackers Tyreo Harrison (ankle) and Paris Lenon and quarterback Craig Nall (hamstring).
