This is an old argument, but an interesting one.
To any scholar of the game it was obvious that the West, as a whole, was far superior to the East last year.
It was unprecedented statistically. It lead many of us to believe that the Champion would surely come out of the West.
That did not occur for a number of reasons.
The Lakers were able, by dint of...
passion, force, Phil, Shaq, Kobe, Fisher's miracle (your choice) advance to the finals.
Once there, they ran into an extremely well coached, motivated and impassioned team that clearly bettered the Lakers. They matched up well, did not buy into any 'Laker mystique' and dominated to win the Championship.
I was amazed and offered my congratulations to that team and their fans.
It does not, however, change the fact that, top to bottom, the West dominated the East.
Except of course when and where it counted most.
