New Owner? Check.
New Staring Goalie? (He's hurt but...) Check.

Now, how about a new roster of skaters? Who would you keep and who would you cut? What do we need and what do we have in excess?

Here's what I'd do:
1. Sign veterans for specific jobs. We have some good to great young defensemen: Brewer, Jackman, Backman, Wideman, Salvador. I'd sign 1-2 veteran defensemen that can QB the PP and lead by example for thse youngster. Also, I think we have a couple of good young forwards that we could develop if given time.
2. Sign some goal scorers. Right now, we have Keith Tkachuk (who can't stay healthy) and Scott Young (who is getting older). Petr Cajanek is a good third-line center but then, that's it! Let's get 2-3 20 goals scorers under contract to help the development of all the youngsters we have.
3. Fire Mike Kitchen. He's just not a good heach coach. Find someone better.
4. Fire Larry Pleau. He's good at throwing money around but not necessarily building a farm system or evaluating talent. He sucks, can him.

Thoughts?

Team needs...alot...of help...

They have no quality centers. At all. So signing a setup man for Young/Tkachuk should be first priority. Trading Doug Weight was just stupid.

They need to land...an entire second and third line...

The defense is solid.

The goalies are all terrible and Marek Schwarz is a long ways away, so they need one too.

They should sign Andy Murray to coach.

I don't get how you dont want Pleau. He built the team that for a long while, was thought of with the Red Wings, Avalanch and Devils.

I agree with you except for the above quotes. Weight was overpaid and under-produced. Curtis Sanford single-handedly turned the team around before he got hurt. There's no doubt in my mind he should be our starting goalie next year. Lalime and Divis suck and I can't wait to see both of them gone.

44 pts in 47 games for a last place team isn't exactly too shabby. Not to mention he had to do alot of it without Tkachuk. Overpaid? Perhaps. But he certainly wasnt under-producing all that much with the TINY bit of talent he had to work with.

Sanford...I still don't see it. He still has the same problems that he has had since he started playing in Worcester ages ago. Do you know who the Blues goalie coach is?

My opinion of Weight has more to do with watching him play the previous years of his tenure with the Blues. This year, he was our number one center, but he still got stupid penalties and he never really seemed like he was worth what we were paying him.

Goaltending Coach

One of the top goaltending coaches in the National Hockey League, Keith Allain has filled that position for the St. Louis Blues since the 1998-99 season, while also serving as an advisor to the club’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Peoria Rivermen. Under his guidance Blues netminders gave up the fewest goals across the NHL in 1999-2000, claiming the William M. Jennings Trophy.

His professional coaching experience also includes serving as a scout for the NHL’s Nashville Predators in 1997-98 and as an assistant coach for the Washington Capitals for four seasons (1993-94 through 1996-97).

Allain’s extensive international coaching career includes serving as an assistant for the United States team that captured the championship of the inaugural World Cup of Hockey 1996 while registering a 6-1-0 overall mark. Allain also served as the goaltending coach for Team USA at the World Cup of Hockey 2004 and was an assistant coach at the 2005 IIHF Men’s World Championship. He also served as an assistant coach for the 1992 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team. Most recently, he was named as an assistant coach for the 2006 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team that will compete this February in Turin, Italy.

His involvement with USA Hockey also includes serving as head coach of the United States National Junior Team for both the 2001 and 2002 IIHF World Junior Championships. Allain began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater, Yale University, where he ranks third all-time among goaltenders in victories and saves. Keith and his wife, Mi, reside in Centerville, Mass., with their three children: Josefine, Julia, and Niklas.

Also, Curtis Sanford was just amazing this season. He was head and shoulders above the rest of our goalies, which I know isn't saying much, and was the main ingredient for the good run we had gor awhile earlier this year. His injury was devastating to any slim chance we had this season.

I'll give him that he's been the best of the bunch this year. I just don't like his style. He's a pretty small guy and he plays even smaller in net. He also keeps his glove too low in his natural stance. I think BCash has a better chance at becoming the starter before Schwarz takes over. Lucky for the Blues, the Goalie pool is easily their most talented prospect position.

Here is what I would do.

-Drop Pleau and Sauer like a bad habit.

-Use their first round pick on Jordan Staal. He's 17 but he's 6'4" 200 pounds and can skate. He's supposed to be as good or better than Eric Staal.

-I would keep the Tkachuk/Cajanek/Orsagh line together because they had good chemistry and where playing well together when Kitchen had them together. All 3 players had their best stretches of the season when they where teamed up. The Blues also found good success with them on a line.

-I wouldn't go on a huge signing binge this offseason because the Blues may have the resources in house to put together a pretty good team. There is talk that the Blues may have signed some stud player from Europe, whos last name is Kahnberg. He might be a top-line player. Then I would sign a LW, like a Patrick Elias or Martin Straka. Both are very skilled players. Straka is a good passer but he's not a big time goal scorer himself.

-I would also work in improving the defense. The Blues need that real stud D-man that they've been missing this year after Pronger was traded. There are two perfect canidates out there, Zdeno Chara and Wade Redden. Chara is 6'9" 260 pounds and has a lot of the tools that made Pronger a special player. He's big, physical and can skate. He can also QB the PP because he has one of the hardest shots in the league. Wade Redden isn't as big as Chara is (but who is?) but he has a lot of ability. He's a good offensive player and is kind of the Al MacInnis to Chara's Chris Pronger. Can't go wrong with either one.

-I would sign a backup goalie who has NHL experience. A guy like a Johan Hedberg might be a decent option.

-I would sign a 3rd line winger, who can help on the PK. Dainus Zubrus of the Capitals would be a good option. He's a solid 2-way player. He's not a physical guy but he's a skilled guy.

-I wouldn't fire Mike Kitchen because I'd like to see him get a shot at coaching a team that has better talent than this year's team has. He has one year left on his contract, so I'd give him that year to see what he can do with a better team.

I think moves like I mentioned would send this team in the right direction.

I was with you until this point. Kitchen took over a pretty good team before the lockout and they just continued to play badly. He just doesn't inspire any confidence in me.

I'll post something bigger later but I do want to comment on coach Kitchen. Sure at the end of last year he didnt do anything to turn them around, but it was his FIRST CHANCE EVER at being the main man for a team. I think he gets a repreve

This season has sucked ass, but it hasnt been anything that Kitchen did. This team NEVER lost their heart, desire and willingness to go out and play. Kitchen made sure this team never gave up. The talent wasnt there but the effort sure as hell was and i give Kitchen alot of credit for that. Pleau isnt very good and he's the one who should go. Give Kitchen a season to coach in which he has players and isnt in an impossible situation to win. He had no chance to win this year...I wanna see what he can do.

Andy Murray will coach again
March 23, 2006
"He will coach again -- I'd almost be willing to bet."
The words are from Mighty Ducks coach Randy Carlyle. The sentiment is the same around the NHL in regard to Andy Murray.
Axed by the Kings with 12 games left on the schedule, Murray is a terrific coach who fell victim to a late-season slide. John Torchetti replaces Murray in the task of rallying the Kings into the playoffs. Murray replaces Torchetti as the guy looking for a job.
Firings come in two kinds -- surprises and saw it comings. This one has touches of both. Assistant captain Craig Conroy figured something in the works, but not at this point. "If we didn't make the playoffs, there was going to be changes -- players, personnel, everybody," he told reporters. "The writing was on the wall for that."
Murray is a great coach but can be a tad prickly. He's spent the past three seasons goading and prodding the Kings into the playoffs. Postseason results haven't been good. But he keeps his criticism of players behind closed doors and stresses the positives to the media.
Was GM Dave Taylor right to pull the lever?
Captain Mattias Norstrom told reporters: "It needed to be done now," he said. "I talked to a lot of the teammates last night. I tried to convey the message that, 'Guys, we've got to realize the responsibility still falls on us. We're at fault because we've got ourselves and Andy Murray in this situation.'
"The solution also is going to be found in this locker room."
For his part, Taylor knows the firing is odd -- the team is pushing for the playoffs and is nine games over .500, although lackluster in recent action that included Monday's 5-0 home loss to the Colorado Avalanche. The Kings lost five of their last seven games under Murray.
If Taylor truly believes the team needs a swift kick in the Winwells, now is the right time. He says he had been contemplating the move for a month or longer. But is Torchetti the right guy? After all, he takes command with a 10-12-4-1 NHL coaching record, assembled at the end of the 2003-04 season with the Florida Panthers. He was a free agent, with no organization ties and was scouting teams on his own.
If the team did tune out Murray, it had better tune in to Torchetti if it wants to retain its hold on one of the final two Western playoff berths.
Meanwhile, Murray gets an early start on coaching's free-agent market. Some smart team will come calling.

It looks like the Blues signed Magnus Kahnberg, a player from Sweeden. From what I've heard, this guy is a guy who can immediately play on one of the Blues top 2 lines. He won't make much more than the league minimum, so this looks to be a steal if the experts are correct on him. It's a bargin compared to what the Blues would have to spend on a scorer via free agency. I'll be intersted to see what Kahnberg can do.

Kind of like the Wings with Samuelsson.

I have this feeling that the Blues are taking Kessel with their number 2 pick.

There isn't one coach in the National Hockey League this season, last season, or ANY season that could have won with this version of the St. Louis Blues. None of the blame goes to Kitchen at all.

It would be stuipd to dump him without giving him a chance to prove himself. He's got another year on his deal...let him try at least.

You're right and completely wrong with that last statement. They have a history of losing under Kitchen but they have tremendous heart under him as well. This team has never thrown a game, given up, lowered heads, not tried or lost their "heart." THose guys have always gone out there and given their best, their best just wasn't good enough because the talent wasn't there. You can see it every game they play. The intensity, the passion, the heart and desire is all there...there is just no talent.

Whereas I can agree Kitchen has only been a part of losing teams and this season has sucked ass and the Blues aren't a good team at all, I can not agree that they ever, at any point this season gave it up. They never gave it up

The team that has been losing to Calgary 7-2 recently had been winning those games before Sanford got hurt. The team has no faith in Lalime and Kitchen has not helped them at all. The team that takes the ice for the next game expects to lose and they will because Kitchen isn't keeping the team focused.

Its really hard to say whether or not Kitchen isnt keeping them focused. I mean that is debatable. What isnt debatable is that Sanford rules and Lalime is the main source to our problems. I doubt Kitchen has anything to do with the fact Lalime smells like the inside of my ass lol. Its hard to keep a team going when you know they will allow 5 goals a game no matter what they do.

If they do get rid of Kitchen I really wouldnt care THAT much, but I feel the need to go to bat for the guy because he hasnt been a part of a good situation at all. This is something that wa s impossible for him to get through for the most part

You can't deny, however, that the team that skates with Lalime in net and the team that skates with Sanford play with the same heart. The team with Lalime in goal is on their heels almost waiting to lose while the Sanford team attacks and is much more energetic.
