PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies on Wednesday announced their seventh and final managerial candidate: Pirates third base coach John Russell. A former Phillies utility player, Russell is scheduled to come to Philadelphia for an Oct. 27 interview. Like all meetings, it will occur at 10 a.m. ET at Citizens Bank Park.
The 43-year-old Russell is currently serving as the bench coach for the Peoria Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League. That team is comprised of prospects from the Red Sox, Pirates, Mets, Rangers and Blue Jays.
Russell, himself, is a top managerial prospect. In 2002, he led Triple-A Edmonton to the Pacific Coast League championship and Baseball America named him Manager of the Year and "Best Manager Prospect" in the PCL.
For the past two seasons, he's coached with the Pirates, having joined them after eight years managing in the Twins' organization. There Russell molded many of the players who now make up a team that has won three straight AL Central Division titles, including Lew Ford, Cristian Guzman, Torii Hunter, Jacque Jones and Johan Santana.
Russell is remembered by Philadelphia fans as a first-round selection by the Phillies (13th overall) in the 1982 First-Year Player Draft. He spent his first five years in the Majors with the team, from 1984-88. In 10 total seasons, Russell posted a career .225 batting average and hit 34 home runs.
Next week will begin a busy second wave of interviews for the Phillies organization. Buddy Bell gets things started on Monday, and he will be followed by Jim Fregosi, Russell and Braves hitting coach Terry Pendleton on Tuesday through Thursday, respectively. As has been the procedure with early candidates Don Baylor, Charlie Manuel and Grady Little, each candidate will meet with the media as part of the interview process.
Russell and Pendleton are the only two candidates without Major League managerial experience.
Philling in: John Vukovich, a Phillies coach for a club-record 17 seasons (1988-2004), will begin a new career. He accepted general manager Ed Wade's offer to become special assistant to the GM.
Vukovich, 57, had served in a number of coaching capacities since 1988, most recently as the team's third base coach under manager Larry Bowa. His 24 years in a Phillies uniform, as a player and coach, is the second-longest total in club history, behind only Bowa.
