The New York Rangers are reportedly interested in free-agent goaltender Kevin Weekes (http://www.tsn.ca/NHL/player_bio.asp?player_id=1449), however, despite some reports, the two sides have not reached a deal, according to the Rockland Journal News.
Weekes was not tendered a qualifying offer by Carolina, leaving him free to sign with another team.
The move would give the Rangers a glut at the goaltending position. Incumbent Mike Dunham (http://www.tsn.ca/NHL/player_bio.asp?player_id=263) is scheduled to earn $3.6-million this season while Dan Blackburn (http://www.tsn.ca/NHL/player_bio.asp?player_id=2565) recently re-signed with the team and is scheduled to earn $825,000 this year.
Weekes earned $2.35-million last season in Carolina.
The Rangers also took Al Montoya with the sixth pick in the NHL draft, however, the 19 year old has said he will return to the University of Michigan for his junior season.
Weekes, a seven year NHL veteran, went 23-30-11 with a goals against average of 2.33 in his first full season as Carolina's starting goaltender. He teamed with Arturs Irbe (http://www.tsn.ca/NHL/player_bio.asp?player_id=1572) in 2001-02 to lead the Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup final, losing in five games to the Detroit Red Wings.
