Quite the shocker
Duke guard J.J. Redick was named the ACC Player of the Week on Monday, Dec. 12 after leading the Blue Devils to a pair of wins. Redick averaged 32.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game for the week. He also shot 52.5 percent (21-of-40) from the field, including 52.0 percent (13-of-25) from three-point distance, and knocked down 10-of-10 free throw attempts.
Redick capped his week with an impressive 41-point performance in Duke’s 97-66 win over No. 2 Texas at Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, N.J. He became the seventh Blue Devils to score 40 or more points in a game with his 41 points tied for the sixth most in Duke history. The Roanoke, Va., native hit 13-of-24 shots from the floor, including 9-of-16 from three-point range as the top-ranked Blue Devils posted the third-largest victory margin (31 points) ever in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 match-up.
His nine three-pointers against Texas tied the Duke record set by Shane Battier vs. Princeton on Nov. 14, 2000. The mark is also the third-best in ACC history and tied for the second-most in the NCAA this season. Redick’s nine treys pushed his career total to 350 and he became Duke’s all-time leader in that category. He passed Trajan Langdon (342) and is now third on the ACC’s all-time chart. He is just one triple behind Georgia Tech’s Dennis Scott and 63 behind Virginia’s Curtis Staples, who holds the ACC and NCAA record with 413 career three-pointers.
During the Texas game, Redick also became the ninth player in Duke history to record 2,000 points in a career. He currently ranked eighth all-time with 2,029 points, 50 points behind former Blue Devil greats Gene Banks and Jason Williams who each scored 2,079 in their respective Duke careers. Duke’s nine 2,000 point scorers is an NCAA best with Georgia Tech, LaSalle and Notre Dame next with six apiece.
Earlier in the week, Redick had a game-high 24 points and added four assists in a 72-59 win over visiting Penn.
He went 8-of-16 from the field, including 4-of-9 from three-point distance.
Redick leads the ACC in scoring (24.9), three-point field goal percentage (47.1) and three-point field goals per game (3.56). He is also fourth in the conference in free throw percentage (.889). He has now been named ACC Player of the Week seven times in his career, including twice this season.
