Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - The Kansas City Royals selected left-handed pitcher Fabio Castro with the first pick in the Rule 5 Draft on Thursday, and then dealt him to the Texas Rangers for infielder Esteban German.
Castro, who is 5-foot-8 and less than 160 pounds, went 5-5 with a 2.28 earned run average last season at Class A Winston Salem in the Chicago White Sox organization.
The 20-year-old, who was one of eight pitchers taken with the first eight picks in the draft, did not allow a run in his final 11 appearances of the year.
Under rules of the draft, which is a staple of baseball's Winter Meetings, Castro must remain on the Rangers' 25-man roster or be returned to the White Sox at a cost of half his $50,000 price as a Rule 5 draftee. German was 3-for-4 in five games for Texas last season.
