Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - The Kansas City Royals have signed pitcher Elmer Dessens to a two-year contract.
Dessens is a nine-year big league veteran who spent the 2005 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He has also pitched for Pittsburgh (1996-98), Cincinnati (2000-02) and Arizona (2003-04).
The 34-year-old righty was 1-2 with a 3.56 earned run average in 28 games last season. He had seven starts and appeared in 21 games out of the bullpen.
Dessens has a career record of 41-51 with a 4.40 ERA in 277 games, including 135 starts.
The native of Mexico had his best years with Cincinnati. In 2000, he posted a record of 11-5 with a 4.28 ERA and in 2002 he finished with the sixth-best ERA in the league at 3.03 despite a 7-8 mark.
The Royals also signed utilityman Joe McEwing to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training. McEwing hit .239 in 83 games with the Royals last season.
