Here is the system used for rankings...it's pretty simple.
(Rep Power x 2) + Posts per day
This was the easiest way to come up with some kind of rankings. Granted they might not be the best, but it's the best possible in order to get this thing rolling.
Next year I promise a better ranking formula.

I'm not thrilled w/the way the rankings came out...some guys who barely post on the Phillies board are ranked way too high...but I dont have the info available to get past that.
Anyway, this is how it is...I promise next year will be better.

Yeah, the guys that don't post and were ranked high will probably get beaten though. The seedings will fix themselves after a while so I don't see it as a big deal.
But I should have never mentioned Enyalois being excluded before. I would have had a bye.
I think the seedings came out pretty good though.
I agree bdetto vs. lwolf looks like the best matchup in the first round. It's a shame one of them won't advance.

I also like how the BOTPP is dominating the front board although I am sure that will piss some people off.

I could be wrong, but won't the number of people that will be involved in the second round with this format lead to more byes down the road? Unless you have some sort of plan for this or I'm misreading something, for this many players you should have 64 first round positions (meaning 42 posters and 22 byes). Maybe I'm just looking at it wrong somehow though. Its late and I've been working on my senior design project for many hours.

You might be onto something.
38 posters (19 battles) occur in the first round. That means 19 people will advance.
For next round, we will have 19 posters advancing and 4 people with byes. 23 posters?
Or am I messing stuff up now? I need to go to freakin sleep.

Definitely a tough draw. I'm wondering if SU is right if we can possibly put the losers of some of the tougher/closer matchups against each other to see who else will advance to the next round. Since I'm not sure if it will work out exactly right.

I'm thinking about that, cuz it looks like he's right.

Yeah. I have no clue. I haven't really thought about it but just looked at it quickly and thought he might be right.
I'm sure somebody could come up with some sort of solution.

Okay...what I'm going to do is have a play-in game for the last seed.
It's going to be between the two losers of the two closest matchups. One-day voting.
If there are ties or more than 2 matchups that are equally close in voting, I will come up w/some type of run-off or something.

That will bring next round to 24, right?
Then it will go to 12. Then to 6. Then to...3.
But maybe that would be cool. A 3-way vote for who wins? It's different than last year, but might be more fun. I don't know.

Of course if thats the case Jsavoy and I would have to make it to the finals since most guys on this board wouldn't want to get into a three way with another guy....

Damnit.
Hmm...I hope i didnt screw this whole thing up.
I could take 3 more people, in the 3 closest matchups....no that wouldnt work either...that'd give us 26, then 13.
hmm...well I could either do a 3-way vote, a 3-poster ranking (3 points for first, 2 for second, 1 for third)...either by posting or PM.
Or, does anyone have any other ideas?

This could work -- kind of like ROY voting.

Yeah...that's kinda what I was leaning towards...this way we can have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finisher as well.

ONe option would be this:
Run a "Wildcard" poll for a day to pick the best of the losers.
That would give 24. (4 byes + 19 winners + 1 Wildcard).
Then run the 2nd round as groups of 3's. That would get you to 8, then you'd be in like Flynn.
Or you bring in 9 of the "losers," and get it to 32. That makes the 1st round virtually meaningless.
That's my thoughts.
C'mon Blue!
12-08-2005, 11:15 AM
The trouble with my last postulation would be grouping the 3's. Here's how I would envision it:
1 vs. 16 vs. Wildcard
2 vs. 15 vs. 23
3 vs. 14 vs. 22
4 vs. 13 vs. 21
5 vs. 12 vs. 20
6 vs. 11 vs. 19
7 vs. 10 vs. 18
8 vs. 9 vs. 17

Only other option I see is to get a mod to wipe these out, start over w/the posters from 23-42 play to knock it down to 10 of those posters, leaving us w/32.
Its up to you guys...I dont care either way...I just wanna get a feel for what you guys think before I make a final decision.

Don't wipe out what's already been done. That's just crazy talk.
Have a play-in or whatever, and leave it at that. No big deal.

I already advanced further than I did last time, I think. I was hoping for the 2nd round KO a la Canibus.

My only real beef with the rankings is that overall time plays too much in the rankings. PureNHL and PDorazio have been here since October 2004, so they have a high Rep Power, but they post sporadically. Rep Power has start date factored into it a lot. So, in my eyes, they don't post much, but yet have a high ranking simply because they've been here a long time.
My point is simply that, when you do a rankings and you get some suspect results, you're bound to piss someone off. Such as Pennstatepat getting a "free pass" to the 2nd round against someone I can't even remember posting here.
Oh well, feels good to lose to someone who oughta still be asscaked banned.

Use binary math. You need 2,4,8,16,32,64,128,etc people per round. If you have any round with out that number of people you need to round up and add the number of byes to equal that number. You could fix this (goofily, but its a solution) by giving byes to the 9 highest seeded people left to get the number up to 32. It would give those top 4 two byes, but then youd have it fixed for future rounds.

I know what you mean. Unfortunately, there's no really good way to figure it out...as I can't find out how many posts were made on the Phils board by each poster.
I was hoping to have actualy rep points, but sully never got back to me w/it.
I'm highly considering using a college-style rankings system for next year.

Just the same, if you want to add in that top 9 seeds get a bye thing in the second round you'll have it solved for now. Unfortunately this doesnt help me out much, but it will even the tournament out for the rest of the way.

I'm actually thinking I'll have one team added in, based on who lost in the closest matchup. They will then automatically be placed as the lowest remaining seed.
That will give us enough so that the last round will be the only one w/an odd number...3.
Then we will do a points based voting...you rank them 1-2-3. Then, we'll have a #1 poster, #2, and a #3. Not just a #1 and #2.
