THRASHERS REPORT

Lehtonen on the mend; Bondra's status up in air

Thrashers general manager Don Waddell said on Monday that goalie Kari Lehtonen returned from specialists in Vancouver and could begin skating and taking shots later this week.

Waddell estimated that Lehtonen could be practicing with the team in 10 days. The rookie was expected to be the team's No. 1 goalie this season but played only 20 minutes on opening night before injuring his groin. He has been out ever since.

The Thrashers likely would send Lehtonen to Chicago (AHL) on a conditioning assignment to play a few games before he could rejoin the Thrashers.

Waddell also said winger Peter Bondra had an MRI exam for what was originally diagnosed as a groin injury on Saturday. Waddell said it is possible that the injury might not be to Bondra's groin, and he's not expecting good news.

The 37-year-old left wing ranks second on the team in goals with 13 and fourth in points with 28. Serge Aubin took Bondra's place in the lineup after he was scratched on Saturday. Eric Boulton was the only healthy scratch.

Kovalchuk peforms well on the road
Ilya Kovalchuk led the league in road points in November with nine goals and eight assists, and he leads the league with 24 road points this season. The league is tracking road points for the NHL/Sheraton Road Performer Award.

High sticks go uncalled vs. Ducks
Coach Bob Hartley implied after Saturday's 2-1 loss to Anaheim that some of his players were hit in the face with high sticks that went uncalled. Defenseman Niclas Havelid said he needed five stitches to close a cut on his nose. He also had a welt under his right eye. Defenseman Jaroslav Modry had a welt on his face from a high stick.

Dunham needs to come back soon as well. Like I said from the start, Garnett aint gonna win any games. It's sad the way the Thrash don't have a goalie on the roster with a save% above 87% now. Not to mention the Sheildsy experience flopped. This team needs help and reallll bad.

Dunham had a setback when stopping pucks this past week in practice, Kari seems to have done ok in a similar drill.

Thrashers general manager Don Waddell said on Sunday that he expected rookie goalie Kari Lehtonen to have his first full practice with the team one week from today. While Lehtonen took shots from a group of players on Saturday, he did not attempt any of the more strenuous side-to-side moves that would stress his weakened groin/core-muscle group that has kept him out since the season opener. "We've got to build up his endurance," Waddell said. Waddell said he thought Mike Dunham (groin tear) was farther along despite the fact that the team chose to suspend Dunham's on-ice workouts after Wednesday. Waddell said Dunham had
"a little soreness" but that it was not from Dunham's injury.
