Lehtonen on the mend; Bondra's status up in air

Thrashers general manager Don Waddell said on Monday that goalie Kari Lehtonen returned from specialists in Vancouver and could begin skating and taking shots later this week.
Waddell estimated that Lehtonen could be practicing with the team in 10 days. The rookie was expected to be the team's No. 1 goalie this season but played only 20 minutes on opening night before injuring his groin. He has been out ever since.
The Thrashers likely would send Lehtonen to Chicago (AHL) on a conditioning assignment to play a few games before he could rejoin the Thrashers.
Waddell also said winger Peter Bondra had an MRI exam for what was originally diagnosed as a groin injury on Saturday. Waddell said it is possible that the injury might not be to Bondra's groin, and he's not expecting good news.
The 37-year-old left wing ranks second on the team in goals with 13 and fourth in points with 28. Serge Aubin took Bondra's place in the lineup after he was scratched on Saturday. Eric Boulton was the only healthy scratch.
Kovalchuk peforms well on the road
Ilya Kovalchuk led the league in road points in November with nine goals and eight assists, and he leads the league with 24 road points this season. The league is tracking road points for the NHL/Sheraton Road Performer Award.
High sticks go uncalled vs. Ducks
Coach Bob Hartley implied after Saturday's 2-1 loss to Anaheim that some of his players were hit in the face with high sticks that went uncalled. Defenseman Niclas Havelid said he needed five stitches to close a cut on his nose. He also had a welt under his right eye. Defenseman Jaroslav Modry had a welt on his face from a high stick.
