View Full Version : The 2nd Battle of the Phillies Posters

We had one at the beginning of the Phillies season. It went well, but it seemed like everyone thought it would be a better idea to have one at the end of the season.
Personally, I wouldn't want to run it. And I don't know who would since the previous runner of it is no longer with us. But I thought I'd throw it out there just to generate some more activity on the boards.

As a sidenote: I would guess, as not to interfere with Newt's GM game, that they would not run at the same time (if there even is a 2nd BOTPP)

What did ever happen to Thomeismyhomie anyway?

we traded him to Chicago for Rowandismyhomie and two Espn posters who may one day make an impact on these boards.

I finished second in the last BOTPP to thomeismyhomie
Thomeismyhomie is never around, hasn't been here in at least 3 months
Therefore, I am the best poster here
So no, we don't need a second battle

I'd be willing to run it.
Maybe a thread for all Phillies fans to sign up? Then some form of ranking...maybe have everyone rank the posters before hand, and the seeding goes on a point scale (such as the polls for college sports?)
Like I said, I'd be willing to run it...just let me know how you guys think it should be done.

eh I dom't think we should go to all that length, I wouldn't sign up for it. It's kind of fun to do but signing up makes it more of a contest than it already is

I would say that we should not have everyone rank the posters before hand -- only because that might defeat the purpose of the entire thing (not that there is a purpose, it's supposed to be fun, entertaining). But if you have everyone rank who should be #1 beforehand, then you kind of have your #1.
If there needs to be a seeding, I would go by posts on the Phillies board or percent of posts on the Phillies board or a combination of that (which I think is what JRoll did). i.e. some objective way to value them.
But if you are volunteering to run it, I'm not going to criticize how you do it. Just offering a suggestion.
It really doesn't matter to me. You could do it alphabetically for all I care.

Perhaps there could be a Sports Board Phillies Olympics.
Phillies board posters (we know who they are and some of the veteran posters) could rank the posters in various categories, and the total final score would be the equivalent of your winner.
Categories could be :
Knowledge
Humor
Style
Trade Ideas
Statistics
Arguments and Debating Tactics
Ability to infuriate others with mindless statistical banter 8)
Perhaps each poster could post a paragraph under each category on why they might deserve the vote of others. Then, the rest of us could mock, er, I mean constructively criticize them in an open forum.
Another idea would be to this in Survivor fashion. Put a bunch of us on the island. An outside person would act as Jeff Probst, and each of us would send him/her an e-mail telling them who we would like voted off the island. This could happen each week, or faster, depending on time. Instead of challenges, maybe all of us would have to answer questions to explain why we belong on the island.
There has to be an efficient method to waste a lot of time doing this.
Thank you for your time.

Really good ideas there...I'll take it into consideration.
Moses...the pre-ranking thing would be just for seeding. So while say abreu might get the most points, some people might prefer noot over him. So in a head-to-head the result might be different than a rankings. Anyways, thats just the first thing to pop into my head...I can come up w/something.
Noot...it wouldnt really be signing up so much, just posting your name in a thread so I dont miss anyone...I dont wanna leave anyone out.
But heres what I'm thinking...if we could get the results from last year, I could use them as the rankings for this year, and fill in w/new posters. Let me see if I can get a hold of them.

Alright...I found a way to find out how many posts each user has made on the Phils board...we'll use that for seeding. I have yet to decide on whether or not re-seeding will occur, or if it will just be one unadjusted bracket. I think it depends on how many people we have.
The Olympics/Survivor idea I'm thinking we could wait on, maybe until after Noot's GM draft-thing because of how involved that would be.
Also, I'll leave khwaps w/the chance to take that on if he so wishes, as he came up with the idea.
If this sounds good, let me know, and I'll get a thread started for those to say if they wish to participate.

Hmm...it seems its not going to be possible to find out the total number of posts on the Phils board, as the search seems to be limited to 500 posts, and many of us have over that amount.
Any other suggestions?

Just use a simple formula. You're right, it's impossible to calculate the total amount of posts a Phils fan has on the Phillies' board alone, so you simply can't use that as criteria. Do something like this:
-postcount
-rep power
-#days as a member
Then, weight those according to how important you deem them in the evaluation process. I would say rep power should be weighted X3, days as a member X2 and postcount X1. That will give you a good basic ranking system for each poster....after that the voters will take care of the rest.
I can help further if you'd like, I still remember pretty well how I did the thing for the Eagles' board awhile back.

could we have alliances?
kwahraps

could we have alliances?
Yes, and I am considering an immunity idol for best answer to a question. For instance, we could have 20 members involved.
Week 1 question : What impact will the Sal Fasano signing have on team morale in the clubhouse?
Best answer (as judged by me, or a committee) would get immunity, then everyone would e-mail me there votes for who to get rid of. Most votes gets booted, followed by a final speech, which you may mock for pure entertainment value. Private messages to discuss voting strategies is encouraged. At the end, we can discuss strategies and members can choose to reveal alliances.
This could be done on every sports board.
We could inspire a whole new wave of fantacism.
Or not.
