Steve Shields: Agrees to Join Atlanta RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com (http://www.rotowire.com/users/ad_jump.asp?id=999)
Thursday, October 27, 2005 Update: The Thrashers agreed in principle to a contract with Shields on Wednesday, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Recommendation: Are you an owner with big question marks at the goalie position? Shields isn't the answer. He could get a few starts this week (if his contract is approved by the league) but once Mike Dunham (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/1331/) comes back Shields will be the backup goalie for a team that has played pretty poorly defensively this season. Once Kari Lehtonen (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/3080/) returns from injury in a month, Shields will likely head back to the AHL.

He's not a stopgap, hes a sieve. The holes in the net with the rooks just got even bigger.

I'll root for him being a former Wolverine, but he is well past his prime.

How in the hell do you lose a game in which you are up 4-0 after 10 minutes? Shields in goal.

Shields Signs

It's all but official. The AP is carrying a story (http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/shownews.jsp?content=h102717A) quoting Thrashers GM Don Waddell that says Shields has been signed and will start tonight against Pittsburgh:

"'I met him this morning. I said: 'Hi Steve, it's Don Waddell, good luck, you're starting tonight,' the Atlanta GM said Thursday from Pittsburgh."

According to the article it's a two-way deal which means Shields could be sent down to Chicago once Dunham and Lehtonen are healthy. those goalies shouldn't expect their spots to be held for them though as Waddell seems intent on keeping the two best goalies, no matter who they are.

I feel comfortable in believing that Shields will not be one of the two staying in Atlanta if the Kari and Dunham get healthy.

Dunham can't go to Chicago, so Waddell's little threat isnt doing much.

On the brightside, Dunham should be back soon!
