ATLANTA (AP) - Ronald Petrovicky picked the right time to end his season-opening scoreless drought.

Marc Savard and Petrovicky scored 40 seconds apart late in the third period, rallying Atlanta to a 4-3 win Saturday night over the New Jersey Devils and ending the Thrashers' four-game losing streak.

Atlanta, outscored 22-2 during its skid, trailed 3-1 after New Jersey's John Madden got his second goal of the game 7:30 into the final period.

Petrovicky got his first of the season only 27 seconds later to get Atlanta (3-5-0) within one. Savard, who also had two assists, tied it on the power play with 7:34 left, and Petrovicky got his second with 6:54 left.

``Two goals tonight, two goals for a season, not exactly a big-time goal scorer, but that's a start,'' Petrovicky said. ``I'll take them. And, it's a part of a big win, so that makes it even more special,'' he said.

It also gave Atlanta rookie goaltender Adam Berkhoel his first win in his second start.

``I thought we'd never score another goal, but we worked hard, we stuck together,'' Atlanta coach Bob Hartley said. ``What a great performance. Even though we got down 3-1, I think that's quite a testament to the guys.''

Martin Brodeur, trying for his 408th career win after tying Glenn Hall for No. 6 on the all-time list Thursday night, stopped 31 shots for the Devils (4-4-0).

``You knew eventually they (Thrashers) were going to come out of their shell, with the skill they have,'' Brodeur said. ``Give credit to that little goalie (Berkhoel), he kept them in the game. It could have been worse. He made some good saves in the second.''

Madden gave New Jersey a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season 6:52 into the game.

Atlanta tied it on Marian Hossa's third goal, a deflection off a shot by Ilya Kovalchuk at 1:10 of the second period.

Sergei Brylin's fourth goal of the season 1:54 into the final period gave the Devils a 2-1 lead.

The Thrashers have been struggling with top goalies Kari Lehtonen and Mike Dunham both out with groin injuries, forcing the team to go with a pair of rookies - Michael Garnett and Berkhoel.

Berkhoel played sensationally in the first two periods, stopping 22 of 23 shots and finished with 31 saves.

``It was awesome for the team. It was special to get that first win,'' he said.

The 24-year-old was perfect on six power play attempts by New Jersey in the first two periods, including twice when the Devils had a two-man advantage for about 1 minute each time.

Notes: Kovalchuk was presented the Rocket Richard Trophy for tying for the most goals in the league in 2003-04. Former NHL scoring champion and Atlanta Flames coach Bernie ``Boom Boom'' Geoffrion made the presentation. ...Thrashers C Bobby Holik spent 10 seasons with New Jersey, helping the club capture the Stanley Cup in 1995 and 2000. ...Devils C Pascal Rheaume spent two seasons with Atlanta from 2001-03 and holds the Thrashers record of four goals in one game. He did that against Florida on Jan. 19, 2002.
