Stars win, yet stars fall - for Blues

Center Doug Weight and defenseman Barret Jackman each expected to be out of the
Blues' lineup seven to 14 days after suffering shoulder injuries Tuesday.

That puts the availability of the two stars in doubt for the team's
regular-season opener next Wednesday at Detroit.

Weight "sublexed" his left shoulder during the team's morning skate, while
Jackman suffered a slight separation of his left shoulder on a hard hit in
Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the Dallas Stars at Savvis Center.

On Tuesday afternoon, Weight underwent an MRI, which showed no damage to the
labrum, but a lot of swelling in the rotator cuff. The injury happened on a
"fluky" play.

"We were just working on some face-offs and battling for a puck, and I reached
down and sublexed my shoulder," Weight said. "Sublex is different than complete
dislocation. It means that it starts to dislocate and it pulls and then it
comes back in. It's sore now . . . I think they said seven to 14 days; that
usually means five to eight days, hopefully."

Regarding the regular-season opener, Weight said: "Yeah, I'm planning on
playing."

Blues coach Mike Kitchen thinks it's possible that Weight could be ready
against the Red Wings.

"Yeah ... knowing Dougie, he'll probably shorten that up a little bit," Kitchen
said. "He'll have a better feel after a couple of days. He'll be sore tomorrow,
and probably the second or third day he'll get a lot more range of motion."

Jackman left Tuesday's game in the first period after a crunching hit and was
not available to comment after the game. Whether he could be ready in a week
was less certain.

"Boy, I sure hope so," Kitchen said.

It's the same shoulder that limited Jackman to just 15 games in the 2003-04
regular season. He had surgery on that shoulder, but Kitchen initially ruled
out surgery this time.

"Oh no, oh no," he said.

The Blues will know more about the injuries today, but Weight for one felt much
better about his situation following Tuesday's game.

"The mistake of this injury, which I was mistaken all day - I was sick to my
stomach worried - is that when you see one guy do it, usually two or three
weeks later, you see him come off the ice again, and finally you have to have
surgery," Weight said. "But that's usually when (the shoulder joint) comes out,
stays out for a minute or so, and then they have to put it back in themselves.
And mine started and came back in. They said that's a real good sign."

Tuesday's loss and the injuries to Weight and Jackman ruined the debut of Blues
defensman Eric Brewer. Brewer sat out of the team's first three exhibition
games with a groin injury.

He cut the Stars' lead to 2-1 in the second period with his first goal with the
Blues. He arrived in the blockbuster trade that sent Chris Pronger to Edmonton
in August.

"It's been way too long," Brewer said. "I was really excited all day, just to
get out there, kind of feel my skates, get out there with the guys, and hear
the chatter on the bench again. It was good."
