CB Deltha O誰eal, whose three interceptions Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings tied a single-game Bengals record, today was named by the NFL as AFC Defensive Player of the Week.
"I really give the defensive line the credit. They really helped me out. It was the whole defense," O'Neal said.
O誰eal, a sixth-year veteran acquired from Denver in a 2004 pre-draft trade, also led the team in tackles (eight) and had five passes defensed. With the three three interceptions against the Vikings, he became the first Bengal since S David Fulcher in 1989 to reach the team record of three picks in a game.
O誰eal made all three of his interceptions in the second half against Vikings QB Daunte Culpepper. O誰eal picked off a long bomb attempt at the Cincinnati 10-yard line early in the third quarter, snagged another at the Minnesota 16-yard line late in the period to set up a Bengals TD, and got his third early in the fourth quarter, snuffing a Vikings threat with an end-zone theft. He also played a part in a fourth INT, deflecting a pass that was picked off by S Kevin Kaesviharn.
O誰eal now has 7 INTs in 14 games as a Bengal, as he had 4 in 12 games played last season.
The last Bengal to win an AFC Defensive Player of the Week award was Brian Simmons in Week 8 of 2003 for his performance in Cincinnati痴 27-24 win vs. Seattle. The only Bengal to receive a Player of the Week award in 2004 was QB Carson Palmer, who earned the offensive distinction in Week 13 for his role in the team痴 27-26 win at Baltimore.
He definitely deserved this award this week and it couldn't have happened to a better guy. Good work, Deltha.
