That's kind of like having 1000 shares of Enron.
On the brighter side they paid next to nothing for the NHL deal. It was a match made in heaven if there is ever a season. NBC will promo the the hell out of it, since it is their only sport, and the NHL needs a network to give it that kind of exposure and attention.

Manny's not pointing at people on it....not the real deal. Sorry, I joined the conversation too late to notice that part.

Did anyone notice this thread just went over 1000 posts?

Schilling cruising, he is through 6 with a shutout.

Pitch count is at 81. It'd be nice if the Sox could get him some more runs though.

How about this, Red Sox 1-5 Hitters this evening are 1-14

I have been fortunate enough to witness one of the best performances in the last twenty years tonight on the mound by a man who has given everything he has to the Sox. Through Six innings Curt Schilling has shown just what the Phillies missed out on last winter, a true ACE. The guy is pitching of one good ankle, his right ankle is heavily bandaged and bleeding through his sock yet through six he has given up three hits and no runs in Yankee Stadium. I am honored to just be able to watch this game tonight, as we all are huddled around a thirteen inch TV at 0540 in the morning out here in Baghdad. The guy is a warrior and above all else a winner no matter what else happens in this division series. I just saw the home run lets hope Francona does not make the same mistake Little Made with Pedro.

HEY PHIL8221

I quickly saw some posts for next years free agent wish list and I see the same things I have been telling people since before the end of the year, Now is the time to make a move for Zito and Trade Liebethal to the Dodgers for some young arms and this will allow us to go after Varitek as one of our top priorties in the offseaon, I have watched him the whole series and I have to tell you I am impressed by the way he leads the Sox, on and off the field the guy is the personification of a winner. I understand we need a true number one starter but more than likely this is going to have to happen via a trade, Lowe is not a number one starter and is a more expensive version of Liddle, I would rather keep Cory Liddle than blow what little money we have on Lowe, Your Thoughts?

Schilling coming out or Arroyo warming up to replace him?

Could we be watching Grady/Pedro II?

Brad

Yes, I think Varitek would be a good pick up, but I'm very doubtful that the Sox will let him go. I do agree with you on Lowe and Lidle, I think you'll find that I really want Wade to sign Lidle as our fifth starter. More because of the fact that I like how he was a big inning eater, and that is what we need in a fifth starter. Abbot didn't pitch too horrible 'at times' this year but I had a major problem with the fact that our 5th starter wasn't able to go more then 5 innings in all of his starts. Lidle would fill the roll nice.

Now with that said, checking Lowe out, I'd rather have Lowe then Milton.

I'm surprised Schilling is coming out also, but we don't know the whole story, i would have let him go out one more inning.

I heard Wakefield is starting tommorrow if they get there, and Lowe would be in the Pen, I assume even Pedro would be in the Pen tommorrow night.

Yeah, Wakefield starts. But he threw 3 last night...I can't imagine he's got more then 5 tomorrow. Pedro can give you 1....something tells me you need Lowe in the 6th and 7th if Wakefield pitches well, more if he doesn't. And he's widely known as exactly what you don't want on the mound on the road in a big game.

With some of the statements that management has made in reference to payroll for next season I dont see us as major players in the free agent class for this year, I see this team as trying to lure one or two guys into town, Hopefully that one or two names on that list is not Pedro Martinez, I think that Wade is going to have to improve our pitching staff through a major deal this offseason and now is the time to pick up Zito, his value is at an all time low as he slipped to the third man on his staff but could easily fill the role of ACE on our staff for next season, That said I believe it would take Burrell now that they have parted ways with Dye they need a bat in the outfiedl and Burrell is still an interesting enough player to get the deal done.

Next years rotation
Zito
Padilla
Wolf
Floyd
Liddle

Although I would like to have Millwood back as our number three starter for about four million less than what he made this year, I doubt that will happen I see him going back to Atlanta. With the money we are saving on Millwood and Milton we can make a big push after either Beltran or Varitek. Sox next season of course would love to keep Varitek but can they afford another 30-40 million to lock him up for four or five years.

Thoughts
BG

PhilaVa
10-19-2004, 10:08 PM
Yes if our management had any kind of a brain they would do exactly what you just said...moving Burrell wouldn't be a bad idea if we got Zito in return but you know we would have to eat some salary on that.

I think we all would be thrilled to have our management make a run at Varitek or Beltran, either of them would be very smart investments, but I also think we all know that the people running this team aren't the smartest apples in the bunch.

I'll be semi-happy if they just get rid of Roberto hernandez, if they sign him I swear I may just puke.

Domino427
10-19-2004, 10:09 PM
I gotta tell you, I like that idea. I did some math, and Beltran is nearly impossible...and that was without Lieby & Burrell's salaries on the books. Gettin Beltran would mean giving up on Varitek, Lowe, and Zito.

Anyways, I'd hope to see us get at least one solid starting pitcher, and either Varitek, Beltran, or another solid SP.

As long as we win, and don't trade any of my fav players, I'll be okay.

Oh, yeah...it's not so much the Sox that we have to worry about, it's Varitek himself....he LOVES Boston.

PhilaVa

I think you will not see Arroyo at all tommorrow, you will see Lowe, Wakefield, maybe Pedro...and Embree, Timlin and Foulke (depending on tonight). Its basically going to be pitching change after pitching change to try to get the win, it should be fun to watch, if we can get there...

Also remember, Kevin Brown starts tommorrow for the yanks, he has the back thing, the hand thing and he is going on 3 days rest. So to me, it's up to the Red Sox bats to get this done.

This is the movement chart

Lieberthal to La for two young arms Take $7.5 million of the books
Burrell to the A's we eat three million of his deal which leaves us with what 4 million we are saving we get Zito in the deal. We save how much from not signing Milton and Millwood, and we resign Liddle to a 2 year deal at 3 million per because like you said the guy can eat innings and he keeps the ball in the park. This leaves us to go after either Lowe or Varitek and if I had to choose Varitek is the guy you guy after with everything we have. Use Thome as a selling point, the new stadium, an up and coming team and a young pitching staff and the fact that we will offer him more than anyone else can to come play for us, I also think it is extremely important to resign Polanco as a super utility guy like Thomeismyhomie has been saying. The guy gives us insurance all around the infield. Especially for Bell.

1B Thome
2B Utley
SS Rollins
3B Bell
LF Howard
CF Michaels and Byrd
RF Abreu
C Varitek

SP Zito
SP Padilla
SP Wolf
SP Floyd
SP Liddle

Uh yeah, I'm not sure I can live through a Phils post season series if it is as ever as tight as this, but unfortunatly we probably don't have to worry about that until we get some new fucking owners who have the balls to support a team and not worry abou their fucking pockets.

I think it's too fucked up, this situation. All that money the city poured into the team and what do they/we get? A slap in the face. We watch teams like Boston and NYC give their fans what they want. Granted, we had a team this year, but to say they are going to drop payroll next year is a damn insult. Players contracts go up every season. If you dont go along with the change, then you are basically just lining up and hoping for a miracle.

Payroll better not be below 80-85 Million, I can understand a bit of a drop now that we won't be paying Millwood and Milton 20 Million combined but some money needs to be put back into this team through at least one FA signing.

We should be taking a run at Varitek and Beltran but I have a feeling we won't even try with either of them which is a shame. It's disgusting.

Ah, I was just busting Jrolls balls, Tek is a great player, I'm thinking if we were to go after him, we could move Lieby for a starter or another Pen.

Some people on this board have some great ideas, the D-Rays option just doesn't work out or make sense at all, but the Zito trade really does, expecially if we eat some of Pats salary, that's a very good option for us, but I'm not sure our crap management will do it or not.

If we are going to trade for a starter, I want to get a true ace, like Zito. I dont want another mediocre-to-good pitcher on this staff...we have enough of them. What we didnt have this year, was a stopper. Milton was as close as we came and he wasnt really even that close. We need that #1 and Zito is there for the taking. I started that bandwagon a long time ago and I still hope that we get him. The D-Rays thing is different. I want us to snatch up a guy like Gathright while he's young. Give Byrd another shot at this thing and give Gathright time to sit back and learn. We can use him to pinch run and play the role of Glanville(we wont need the D-Sub if Byrd is out there). My original idea was Howard for Zito and I would still make that in a heartbeat. The A's are so cheap, we may actually be able to get away with that. If they want Myers, or a deal for Burrell, hell we could work something out. When a guy like Zito is out there, a good team HAS to make a run.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind if they did, I'm just very happy we got some good games out of this series, I'll remember it even if they lose, but I'll remember it more if they win. I want to see history but if I don't, that's ok too....

I don't think they blow it though, I think the Sox O is going to have a great night.

Yeah, I'd let him go back out but even though it's only the fourth he is on that you get into troulbe you're coming out soon type of deal. Five innings from him would be just as good as a CG in my eyes...expecially on two days rest...
