I was just checking out the standings and noticed this.
The Cardinals have a losing record against only one ballclub, the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cards are 4-5 against the Brew Crew, but have 8 games down the stretch to rectify that. The Cards are also 11-1 in interleague play including a 3-0 sweep of the AL West leading A's and a 2-1 series against the potential wild card Rangers.
The Cards have split the season series against three teams, Montreal, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. Of those, only the Giants look like they have a shot at the postseason.
The Cards have not played either the Dodgers or Padres, but will face both teams in a potential playoff preview for 12 games straight starting on the 31st.
Also still on the schedule, the celler dwelling D'Backs come to town in mid-September. The Cards swept them in Arizona early in the year, so they'll need 1 win to lock up the season series. The D'Backs should be well over 100 losses and mathematically eliminated from contention by the time they get here. The Cards will make their only visit to Coors in their third to last series of the season. They were 2-1 against the Rockies in Busch. The Cards also have six games against Houston down the stretch and are 7-5 against the Astros. Up next, 8 games against the Pirates (only 5-4 against Pittsburgh previously, this year), and a final 3 game set in Cinci (Cards have already locked up the season series vs. the Reds by going 13-3).
Now, for the bad news: In their first 5 games against the Giants, the Cards essentiallly played a 5 game series with home field advantage. And lost 3-2. And Schmidt didn't pitch any of those 5 games (though the Cards beat the Giants with Schmidt on the mound in game 6).
