RIVER FALLS, Wis. _ The Chiefs have been camping for almost a week, meaning they’re getting close to the time when they usually hold their joint practices against the Vikings. Minnesota trains in Mankato, Minn., a couple of hours away.

But the Chiefs won’t be practicing with the Vikings this year. They told Minnesota not to bother making the trip to River Falls.

The Chiefs lost a player for the season to injuries in the Minnesota practices in each of the last two seasons and were concerned it might happen again.

Instead, the Chiefs will just continue their usual practice routine. They will take the day off Thursday but hold two-a-day workouts Friday and Saturday.

“We’ll work fine,” coach Dick Vermeil said. “We control our own (schedule) and we don’t have to coordinate practice with somebody else. You don’t get to compete against somebody else but we have the four preseason games and that should be enough.”

The Chiefs won’t face outside competition until the Aug. 12 preseason opener against the Vikings in Minneapolis.

Coming off Tuesday night’s practice, the Chiefs held a 35-minute special teams workout this morning. They worked on punt and kickoff return.

Vermeil said the Chiefs might hold Priest Holmes from this afternoon’s practice. Holmes took a shot to the head in goal-line work Tuesday night.

He also suggested injured wide receiver Freddie Mitchell could return to practice as soon as Friday. Mitchell’s agent, Matt Couloute, had said Mitchell would miss a week to 10 days.
