Shields says he will playBy ELIZABETH MERRILL, The Kansas City Star
August 3, 2005 RIVER FALLS, Wis. - Despite lingering back problems that have kept him out of camp, 10-time Pro Bowl guard Will Shields (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/2445/) said Tuesday that he has no plans to retire.
"Everybody else is speculating on what I am going to do," Shields said. "Nobody has ever asked me the question.

Shields, who told reporters this summer that he was pondering retirement, was back Tuesday from a trip to Kansas City to get a third opinion on his back. He said he's still waiting on some results but feels better than he did last weekend.
Coach Dick Vermeil said it was unclear when Shields would practice. Despite battling a long list of aches and pains, Shields has started 191 straight games, which ranks second in the NFL to Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/1025/)'s 205. Shields rested in the offseason, staying away from team conditioning and a chunk of workouts.
Shields will be only 34 this fall but has been slowed by an arthritic condition in his knee and lower back.
"There is more to it than just the back," Shields said. "There is the back, the knee, the elbow. There is old age and all of the above. (There is) consideration of the future in order to function normally for your family."
The Chiefs' offensive line, considered one of the best in the NFL, will return intact this fall. But the linemen haven't put in a lot of on-the-field time together. Tackle Willie Roaf (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/2586/), another 10-time Pro Bowler, is being held to one practice a day because of his own nagging ailments.
Guard Brian Waters (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/5349/), another Pro Bowler, missed offseason workouts to spend time with his kids in Texas.
"Regardless of what it is, knee, back or whatever," Shields said, "you always want to be on the field and do the best you can. … You want to be productive. And that's the big thing for me. I don't want to go out there and just be a guy out there. I want to be able to contribute."
