Trying to keep up with the trades....

1. San Francisco selects – Alex Smith, QB Utah. The 9ers really wanted Rogers despite what everyone says, but the best contract will be made with Smith so he is the pick

2. Tampa Bay selects – Aaron Rodgers, QB California. The Dolphins trade this pick to Tampa Bay knowing they can still get the RB they want at number 5. Tampa gives their 1st rounder and a third rounder next year to jump 3 slots and get Rogers before Cleveland does.

3. Cleveland - selects - Mike Williams WR USC. Cleveland cannot pass on the only sure thing in the draft. Trent Dilfer finds the pick so sweet he is diagnosed with diabetes.

4. Chicago selects - Braylon Edwards, WR Michigan The Bears see all the elite RBs still on the board and cannot resist the opportunity to improve here.

5. Miami selects – Ronnie Brown, RB Auburn Miami moved down and collects an extra pick for next year…and still gets the RB they need so badly.

6. Tennessee selects – Carnell Williams, RB Auburn. The Titans are disappointed to have missed out on Edwards and Williams. For a while, they try to trade down. They find no one willing to part with enough picks to move up this high. So they select the best playmaker left on the board.

7. Minnesota selects – Derrick Johnson, OLB Texas

8. Arizona selects – Cedric Benson, RB Texas. Cardinals are well pleased to get the RB they need.

9. Washington selects Antrel Rolle, CB Miami. And there was much rejoicing…

10. Kansas City selects – Adam “Pac-Man” Jones, CB West Virginia Kansas City jumps up to this pick to get the Pac-Man and fill their biggest need. They give more value to get in the top 10, but it’s worth it. Detroit trades the #10 pick to the Kansas City Chiefs for the Chiefs 1st rounder (#15), the Chief’s 3rd round pick #99 and a 3rd round pick in 2006. The Chiefs have three 5th round picks this year, so they can afford this move.

11. Dallas selects - Shawne Merriman, OLB Maryland

12. San Diego selects – Troy Williamson WR South Carolina

13. Houston selects –. Alex Barron, OT Florida State. Despite other needs, protecting Carr is the most important thing on the Texan’s list this year. Barron will allow Carr more time to consider his options.

14. Carolina selects - Mark Clayton, WR Oklahoma

15. Detroit selects - Marcus Spears DE, LSU. Detroit needs a pass rusher in a big way. After trying to trade down further and failing, they make a solid pick here to ensure their pass rush will get a big boost.

16. New Orleans selects – Thomas Davis, S Georgia. He may be too big to play safety and the Saints would love to have his hard-hitting attitude at linebacker anyway. This is the spark the Saints D needs to get out of the cellar.

17. Cincinnati selects – Travis Johnson, DT Florida State. Cincinnati considers taking Shaun Cody for his ability to play DE as well, but ultimately has to take the best overall talent.

18. Minnesota selects – Reggie Brown WR Georgia. Reggie’s stock has been on the rise and his 41.5 inch vertical overcomes his less-than-ideal 6’2” height. He has excellent RAC as well.

19. St. Louis selects – Brodney Pool S Oklahoma. Having just missed out on Davis, the Rams are still well pleased to see Pool still on the board at this point. Now they don’t have to worry about Archuletas back so much.

20. Dallas selects – David Pollack, DE Georgia. With Merriman already in the bag, Dallas decides it can wait to get another receiver until next round. The majority of the deep crop of DEs are still on the board, and Dallas is very excited about this upgrade to their defense.

21. Jacksonville selects – Jammal Brown, OT Oklahoma

22. Indianapolis selects – Carlos Rogers, CB Auburn. Baltimore trades first round picks with Indianapolis. Indianapolis gives up their 3rd round pick #92 overall to move up. They know that Rogers would not make it past Green Bay so they jump at the chance to grab him.

23. Seattle selects – Erasmus James, DE Wisconsin The Seahawks take a chance here that could make their defense elite. They are hoping that last year’s first rounder, Tubbs, will come back strong this year. Somewhere, Jamie Sharper is smiling over this pick.

24. Green Bay selects – Brandon Browner, CB Oregon State. While there are no safeties remaining worthy of a #24, there are some excellent CB’s and Browner has the tools to convert to safety (ala Michael Boulware). Browner has unusual size at 6’4” and is a great open field tackler.

25. Washington selects – Jason Campbell, QB Auburn. Washington makes good by taking who everyone knew they would. It is a reach, to be sure, but fills a need that is almost overwhelming..

26. Oakland selects – Dan Cody, DE Oklahoma. The Raiders traded for this pick so they could get an intense defender that would jump-start their defensive front. The DEs still on the board here are irresistible to the Raiders.

27. Atlanta selects – Matt Roth DE, Iowa. Atlanta takes the best D lineman on the board and gets some depth in a place where Brady Smith is not getting any younger.

28. San Diego selects – Shaun Cody, DE USC. The Chargers take advantage of the deep DE class and get a star here with great attitude and heart.

29. Baltimore selects –Elton Brown G, Virginia. Baltimore picks up another 3rd round pick (#92) to drop down 7 spots. This is a small reach for the best guard in the draft, but if fills a huge need and is the player they wanted anyway.

30. Pittsburgh selects –. DeMarcus Ware, DE Troy. Troy is the tweener that Pittsburg always looks for in their DEs. Merriman was the other, but….

31. Philadelphia selects – Heath Miller TE, Virginia. Philly has plenty of picks to ensure they get the guys they need. But they are stunned to see the top TE still on the board at this point and snap him up.

32. New England selects – Barrett Ruud, MLB Nebraska. The Patriots need to get younger at ILB, and Ruud is the real deal. Some may think he is a reach here, but they are sadly mistaken.

33. San Francisco selects – Roddy White, WR Alabama-Birmingham. The 49ers have their star QB and add a receiver that he can grow up with. Best of all, Roddy is no head-case and is not full of himself like TO.

34. Cleveland selects – Darryl Blackstock, OLB Virginia. The Browns wanted Jason Campbell, but with him gone there are no other QBs worthy of this pick, so they add best 3-4 guy still on the board.

35. Philadelphia selects – Khalif Barnes OT, Washington. The Eagles know that Khalif is a first round player and know Jon Runyan is on his way out. This pick will please Donovan McNabb’s mother to no end.

36. Tampa Bay selects – Odell Thurman, ILB, Gorgia. Gruden likes him because of his play-making ability and is more than happy get him here..

37. Tennessee selects – Chris Henry, WR West Virginia. The Titans passed on Randy Moss and feel this is their second chance. They will not pass on him again.

38. Oakland selects – Kevin Burnett, OLB Tennessee. The Raiders grab the biggest badest defensive lineman they can find still on the board. This big hitter will please the Oakland brass no end.

39. Chicago selects – Ciatrick Fason, RB Florida. The Bears can give him some time to bulk up, but this is depth they need now.

40. New Orleans selects – Channing Crowder, ILB Florida. The Saints, like many teams, know this guy will be a star some day. Since they already have a hard-hitting safety, the Saints complete their defensive upgrade with this stud.

41. Detroit selects – David Baas, G Michigan. The Lions MUST have offensive line help. Baas can start immediately. The Lions still need another receiver, but they can wait because they only need a #3 guy.

42. Dallas selects – Josh Bullocks, S Nebraska. The Cowboys have a huge hole at safety. Josh is a ball-shark that will make opponents think twice.

43. NY Giants select –. Kay-Jay Harris, RB West Virginia. The Giants were hoping for Fason, but are happy to get Harris. His maturity could help the Giants’ young QB feel more at ease..

44. Arizona selects – Alex Smith TE, Stanford. The Cardinals have never had the TE that they need to do all the things Green likes to do with TEs. Alex is a solid started who can contribute right away. With their starting RB already in the bag, Green has completed his offensive supporting cast…now to look for a QB.

45. Carolina selects – Anttaj Hawthorne DT, Wisconsin. Anttaj should not have slipped this far, but Carolina is well pleased to get him here.

46. Kansas City selects – Lance Mitchell, MLB Oklahoma. Kansas City will be all about defense on the first day of the draft. Mitchell is a great prospect with some speed and will help out immediately.

47. NY Jets select – Justin Miller, CB Clemson. After signing Jeb Putzier, the need for a TE is down and negotiations with Ty Law are going nowhere fast, so its time to go and get the CB they need..

48. Cincinnati selects – Chris Canty DE Virginia. The Bengals need a DE and Canty is a monster at 6’7” and 285 lbs. If he pans out, the Bengals D may have found its leader of the future.

.

49. Minnesota selects – Ernest Shazor, S Michigan. Fred Smoot answers the mail at the CB position, but the Vikings really need a strong presence at safety and Shazor is an intimidating presence that will team with Smoot to make the Minnesota secondary very dangerous.

50. St. Louis selects – Chris Colmer, OT North Carolina State. With Saipaia moving to guard, the Rams need another tackle and shopping to a tackle during free agency gave the Rams sticker shock.

51. Green Bay selects – Charlie Frye, QB Akron. It is finally time to select Favre replacement and this is a tough kid with all the intangibles they are looking for.

52. Jacksonville selects – Cory Webster, CB LSU. With this pick Jacksonville has now filled both of their glaring holes. The remainder of the draft will be about taking the BPA.

53. Baltimore selects – Fabian Washington, CB Nebraska. This burner will help a very thin CB core and add elite speed to the group.

54. Seattle selects – Jonathan Babineaux DT, Iowa. Seattle must improve its front seven to be competitive this year. Guys with non-stop motors are rare and Seattle is happy to get one here.

55. Buffalo selects – Chris Spencer, C Mississippi. This is the player Buffalo had targeted from the beginning and they are well pleased to see him still on the board here.

56. Denver selects – Roscoe Parrish, WR Miami (Fla). Even though Roscoe is a little short, Denver needs a kick return guy very badly and his good hands will help out a receiving core that is not getting any younger.

57. NY Jets select – Adam Terry, OT Syracuse. McKenzie is a Giant now and the Jets have a hole on the right side of the line that this 6’8” 330 lb body will fit right into. And if he adds another 20 or 30 pounds, no one will complain.

58. Green Bay selects – Mike Patterson, DT USC. Green Bay needs some depth on their front seven and this doesn’t know when to quit. His motor will really help add punch to the Packers defense.

59. Atlanta selects – Oshiomogho Atogwe, S Stanford. Atlanta thinks this guy will be a star and they could be right. His height is not ideal, but he is a tremendous athlete and a hard hitter. The dirty birds love his aggressive, ball-hawking attitude and with Brian Scott, could make an excellent tandem of safeties..

60. Indianapolis selects – Luis Castillo, DT Northwestern. Having gone CB with their first pick, Dungy will want some help on the line here. Castillo has been climbing the charts quickly due to his combine workout.

61. San Diego selects – Marlin Jackson, CB Michigan. With Randy Moss in their division, the Chargers cannot have enough CB depth. Jackson may end up as a safety, but either way he adds depth in a critical area.

62. Pittsburgh selects – Eric Green, CB Virginia Tech. The Steelers CB core is starting to get old and could use some new blood. Green is a leader who can be the foundation of the future for the Steelers.

63. Philadelphia selects – J.J. Arrington, RB California. The Eagles were hoping to find DT in either the first or second rounds, but are happy to find this playmaker still on the board.

64. New England selects – Craphonso Thorpe, WR Florida State. If anyone can get the playmaker out of hiding in Thorpe, Belichick can. New England sees a diamond in the rough here and with a little shot of confidence provided by playing for the Super bowl champs, they could have exactly that.

No Matt Jones in the first 2 rounds? Eagles are more likely to select him than Miller.

The Bucs will not be able to move up for their 1st and 3rd rounder next year. That basically equates into a first and a 4th. It will take at least a 2nd this our a 1st next year for them to move into that spot.
