My least favorite moment of the season thus far:

Last night ESPN Baseball Tonight...12 minutes before the game starts:

Harold Reynolds: "The Central division races is going to be really close and exciting to watch this year between the twins, tigers and indians."

Oh really fool?

Vegas has not released odds yet on who will give Harold's wife the most orgasms this year.

I was ready to place bets on Ron Jeremy, Peter North and Michael Jackson.

End of the day for 4/12 magic numbers:

VS: Twins: 155
VS. Detroit: 154
VS. Cleveland: 154
VS. Royals: 154

Of course watching the Baseball Tonight guys talk about the AL Central after the game on Sportscenter, they promptly mentioned the Tigers and how dominant they look thus far...

2-1 VS. KC (at Comerica)
1-2 VS. Cle (at Comerica)
0-1 VS. Min (at the Metrodome)

Pretty dominating stuff.

True...

Little miffed by "The Meat Hook's" comments. Actually not so much by his comments saying the Indians were his only competition, but the fact that Analysts are running around calling it a "3-team race now!"

3 Teams with us being the 4th.

1 run on 14 hits...Twinkies youngness showed last night...We got away with one...Nothing like some good situational play to give a fan some confidence...'specially after our best baserunner gets gunned down at home to kill a rally at game's start...

Great night tonight!!! Hell...I watched the Sox from inning 5 on and the Twins thereafter...

Some key thoughts:

Thank goodness for the goochamunga...4-4...Just awesome...Clutch hit be Everett on the right side...He still looks about as uncomfortable as can be on that side...

Shingo coming back from 3-0 to get Berroa...Excellent....Just....Excellent...

Bob Wickman barely saved that game against the twins...God help us should he ever play for the Sox...It pained me to watch that man pitch...but he survived and I'll take it...

BBTN was just talking about how Wickman intentionally balked to advance the runner to third last night. He thought that the Twin on 2B was stealing his signs, similar to what Erstad was doing to him last season.
Pretty smart to concede that run by advancing the runner, instead of possibly giving up a big-fly to the batter.

Oh yeah.......... 132!

Well, they did have a stretch that included the two best teams in the AL West (twice) and the best team in the AL East. Let's look at that record:

Against angels: 4-3
Against Texas: 2-3
Against Baltimore: 2-2

That's a .500 record against the best teams in the AL. But take it for what it's worth.

I don't it is the Sox falling back to earth so much as the Tigers playing some better baseball. A couple recent comeback wins have really helped them out and have put them right there with the Indians. I am interested to see how well they do against the O's when they are at home... considering the Orioles are probably the best road team so far this year.

85!!!

This is truly unbelievable...

Funny moment of yesterday's game: Pods throwing down his helmet in a tantrum after getting picked off of first base in the first inning...Just doesn't have the same "oomph" as when the Big Hurt does it....but reminded me of him anyways...Little Hurt??? Maybe...if he ever hits a home run...

I will give anyone 8-1 odds that Pods never hits a home run this year...That is...If you think he will hit one, You may place the amount you would like to bet in this thread (max 1 million) and I shall thus sullify you if he hits one.

Seeing as we've got another dreaded "at Oakland" series coming up, and the Twinks follow up Detroit with Milwaukee, TB and Kansas...I would assume that they get a few games back from us before the break....BUT...I've been know to be wrong....

"What could have been..."

The above is the title for the weekend of June 24-27...

#1 If the Sox traded Willie Harris, Juan Uribe and Joe Crede for a pile of mud. I wouldn't complain much.

#2 By far the worst moment of the weekend was Thomas and Konerko both popping out in the damn infield yesterday in the 7th...Thomas on the first friggin pitch...Pathetic.

#3 We GIDP'd twice yesterday...matching our runs total for the last two games....

#4 Did I just type #3 as factual information??? Damn.

#5 If I had my way, I would give the entire Cubs fanbase a collective rubber band snap on the ass....

#6 If you want to call players out in the media (Buehrle-Maddux, Oz-Prior vs. Garland), please back it up. PLEASE.

#7 Thank goodness for Detroit Kitty pitching. I have faith we can right this thing in the short-term...although a severe perception change has grown roots in my mind after Saturday and Sunday's games.

We are officially at midseason...81 games...Rule of thumb says that if your magic number is less than your remaining games, well then you are on your way...(I just made that rule of thumb up)...I feel that we can still go 74-7...thus controlling our own destiny....but that's just me...

As for the weekend,

The Oakland thing was inevitable....I was in ESPN zone in Disney watching Sunday's game...We were up 2-0...All was well...Had my home run chili cheese dog (If you've never had one at ESPN zone...Have one...Damn good hot dog...DAMN good...) Then all hell breaks loose with balls going off legs and wild throws...At one point I swear little gremlins ran on the field and depantsed Buehrle...Thank goodness for Tampa (well, except for the fact that they couldn't muster ONE from Minny...thus magnifying our sixth series loss of the year exponentially)...

Cry in my beer moment of the weekend: From the gremlin game: Stat shown...Sox 11-33 vs. the A's since 2001...

I blame that stat on Jerry Manuel...Just because.

Anyone ready to start an El Duque watch??? We give up 5.6 runs per game when McCarthy starts...as compared to 3.71 when he doesn't...Almost 2 runs more per game?!?!?! The kid isn't ready yet...

Still...All is fine and well in Soxland...8.5 up...

Stat of the day: Only two players on the Twins have as many homers as the Big Hurt...Only one of those two has more...3 more....Wow.

A sweep of the A's gives us 60 wins at the break....60! Doubtful that we sweep the A's...but still...There is a chance!

Another thank you to the Rally Monkeys and the Tiggers for thwarting our enemies....

What a sh*t weekend....Hope Oakland takes the A train to eliminationville...would hate seeing them in the playoffs...apparently...

6 games...1 measly point...courtesy of Kansas City...

Buehrle, Garcia and Garland all pitching at home...Hell, I expect 1 win against the All Star team...much less Oakland...

Two positives to take from this weekend:

1) The Sox don't have to play Oakland again in the regular season (and hopefully the playoffs as well).

2) The two teams chasing the Sox for home-field advantage (Red Sox and Angels) struggled this weekend as well. Red Sox 1-3 against Bal. and Angels 0-4 against Seattle.

I love it.I love it.I love it.I love it.I love it.

A couple years ago I put Brett Boone in a category of players I hated to play against, but would have been my hero if I wasn't a Sox fan.
Other players in said category are: Joe Randa, Mike Sweeney, Torii Hunter, Mark Kotsay, Ronnie Belliard and Jermaine Dye. (Thank god he is one of us now)
Joe Mauer will be a huge thorn in our side until the end of time as well.

Sorry, I just love being the bad guy.

We lose Big Hurt....I should be pissed, right?

We proceed to take 3/3 vs. the O's and watch our division rivals the past 3 years get pounded 3/3 vs the Bosox...I should be happy, right?

We gain Geoff Blum and ONLY Geoff Blum...I should be pissed, right?

Peter Gammons gets nominated to the hall of fame and DOES NOT include that he thinks the Twins/Cubs will be in the World Series in 2006...*twitches* I should be happy, right?

The division race is done...I'm just basically type-counting this number down at this point....I should be happy, right?

Cliff Politte's weiner shrunk three inches after a one pitch outing yesterday....I feel bad for him. Kind of brash for a team that lost 8 of past ten

There is no doubt the sox will make the playoffs

and chances are, still win division

i've said earlier i'd be more excited if the twins were reaonsably close (alghouh i do like late season surge, hope we can get a WC, if not, build condifdence for next season)

BUT this stretch is looking to undo everything they did in begining of season, and it's casting a lot of doubts of sox ability to win series

11 for the Division...

10 for the playoffs....(Wildcard)

The Twins announcers spent at least 6 of the innings of today's baseball game talking about 1 of 4 things: (1) The sox choking (2) The Indians doing great (3) The fact that the sox winning 2-1 would be the exact same score as the last 2 times they beat the Twins or (4) How spectacular Johan Santana has been against us in his last 6 starts...

Unfortunately for them, they forgot some other really good ones...That their magic number to be mathematically eliminated from the Division race is now 1...from the playoffs is now 4...How they failed miserably in spite of Johan owning their biggest rival....and how the Sox were the first American League team and 2nd MLB team to 90 wins today....

Thanks for the fun boys.

Division: 4

Wildcard: 4....Theoretically 2 because the Yanks/Red Sox play each other 3 times therefore guaranteeing that 1 of those 2 loses twice thus making the Yanks'/Red Sox 65 a 67 in a most conservative measure.

2 more win gets us in the dance....Hopefully these next two vs. the Tigers and then we can focus on the division with a much reduced pressure level vs. the Indians.....

A nice little factoid here: In order to miss the playoffs, the White Sox would have to lose five games in a row from here.....With our rotation, that won't happen.

Yeeha!

The Sox have guaranteed themselves at least a playoff game for the wildcard spot. One more win, a Yankees loss, or Red Sox loss (just for today, not to each other) and the Sox clinch a playoff spot.

Well if we're going to play THAT game, I can find a division-winning team whose accomplishments I can now deem "worthless" over the last 3 years.....

The number goes down on a losing night thanks to Detwa going down...

Some plusses from last night's game:

First SOLID effort by Garland.

Brian Anderson with a 2 out, ninth inning jack to take it to extras.

I'm guessing fatigue got us toward the end....didn't get to see the game....No wonder the scrappy kid got the game-tying dong...Damn kids have too much energy....

Only got to see the first inning last night due to fatigue....BUT...after watching Pods get picked off by the catcher...Got me thinkin...

Anyone else feel that Pods is slowly creeping into "anyone with a decent pickoff move will nail this guy" territory?

I'm thinking Buehrle would hand him his ass....

His reaction time is horrible...and every time the pitcher throws to first, I swear it is close enough that I think he will be out...

Just wonderin' out loud.

Great game yesterday....I'm jealous of who attended.

Crede/Pablo/Juan get the game balls all for mega-clutch hits.....I'd say Pablo would get the "goldest" of the gold stars though....2 out none on in the bottom of the ninth and a jack? First of the year? One of few? Nice job kid.

I believe in the power of this magic number thread.....We're going on a Celtics-type run here....

I even got to catch the last inning of the tiggers chokin to the O's last night....Like a double bonus...

Only angry moment of the night was when Anderson ran into the wall for no reason in the first inning and let the ball clang back onto the field away from him...

87.

Yesterday's game stunk as losing to the Pirates (seeing how they have been playing), but it capped our 7th straight series win....That's 2/3 baseball or better for almost a month....Can't complain...

Detroit is just unreal....They may be a team of destiny this year...For sure, they are putting on a display...If they continue to win at the clip they are, we'll need to basically beat them 9 times out of the remaining 13 to take the division...

That's a tough mark to hit....Lot of baseball left...and I've never felt so confident about a Sox team as I have this one...They just ooze confidence, poise and execution....Detroit is just outplaying what I see as monumental production from our boys...Although Garcia/Vazquez/Garland need to get those ERA's down....The reason we catch up so much? I think I can find a finger to point...They've got the stuff...We'll see how they do in the second half....

Some tidbits that I enjoyed from yesterday's game:

Thome's dong outside of the stadium that bounced into the water...They claimed that that was one of only 12 or so guys to leave the park....Surprisingly, Daryle Ward was the one guy who hit the water on the fly....I don't know how to take that...

Politte just threw a friggin meatball on that walkoff...He should fly to siberia and run up and down some snowy mountains for a bit and then come back again...

Contreras' streak still lives thanks to the Thome dong as well...

I foresee another winning series against the scrubs starting today...

I say to Menear and his Tigers: Noonan.

Jiddy78
07-24-2006, 08:24 AM
72...and so begins, with last night's victory vs. the Rangers, our longest winning streak of the season.

Sandy Alomar is back...Should be interesting how he affects our pitching staff, calling games and such....This is hardly the Jerry Manuel Era...

I don't expect to lose again until Toronto.

For those that think our ship is sinking (*boos*), 64 is the magic number for the wildcard. With 65 games to go, that means we control our own playoff destiny. 64-1 or better and in.

Slumps make me cranky....Jim Thome's strikeouts are getting to me during this slump. Anyone think Pauly in the 3 with big Jim in 4 is a better option?

No...He's been struggling...but he still is a better contact hitter than Thome...plus uses more of the field on a regular basis....just a thought to maybe spice things up...Although, I don't want our boys to get all Jerry Manuel on the lineups...

Surprisingly, he is hitting .250 vs. lefties....He's just a free-swinger...More often than not vs. lefties...It just vexes me that our 3-spot can't go oppo that much..Of course, with 81 RBI's at the moment....
