View Full Version : Larger Nets

Yet another stupid idea that they NHL is entertaining. They should just regulate the goalie's pads. That shouldn't be too hard to do.
This kind of reminds me of a golf article in SI a year or two ago. The technology making golf balls was allowing golfers on the PGA tour to shoot way better scores at tour events so golf courses modified the courses making them longer and tougher rather than just regulating the golf balls.
Now I know thats a way more expensive example than larger nets, but its they same idea. They should have just regulated the golf balls and the NHL should just regulate the pads.

I agree that the bigger net idea is stupid. I also don't like the idea of allowing the two line pass. There's nothing wrong with a 0-0 game if both teams are giving good effort and making some good hits.

If they make the nets bigger, someone will get an ass kicking. There isnt a need for it. John Buccigross tried to prove in his 10 ideas for hockey or something of how much better it will make everything.
Now I know goalies are a hell of a lot better today but increasing the nets is too much. The NHLs watered down lineups have finally caught up to them. Most teams 4th lines dont do squat for scoring and even some 3rd liners are the same way.
They just need to make the game faster and decrease goalie equipment.
Less teams = more scoring

I think we should have continous OT .... Sudden death of course.... that would make the game more exciting to me...teams would be forced to open it up...instead of playing for a TIE....

Thats what us REAL fans say...
...but the casual fan...oh, no....they want scoring. So the "casual fan" who are usually the ones who buy the expensive seats/luxury boxes, and make the team money, are the ones they make the game for.
I'm sorry, but hockey is a man's game...its a rough, battle to the end, kick some ass, kinda game...dont screw that up for us.

Now I dont mind the close low scoring games either, what I hate is the slow paced hockey. There isnt anything more boring then watching a team play the trap or something else that slows down the game.
Fast paced hockey is where the key is and I think that Bettman believes to get that must have more scoring.
I'm not sure why this is such a big deal to you guys. Is a goal that is 2" taller and 2" wider going to make that big of a difference?
Now I don't consider myself a hockey "purist" by any means, but I am more than just a casual fan and I don't see anything wrong with this. To me it is no different than the NBA widening the lane, adding the shot clock and adding the 3 point shot or the NFL moving kickoffs back to the 30 yard line and introducing the kickers ball or MLB introducing the designated hitter.
As times change sometimes the game needs to change as well. And change isn't necessarily always bad.

I hate this idea, not because i'm a purest or anything but it doesn't fix the problems. The goalies are just gonna have bigger equipment and thats the problem.
Goalie equipment used to be about protecting the goalie, now it's about helping them stop the puck.

Everyone keeps saying they need to regulate the goalie's equipment...correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it already regulated???
Perhaps the regulations should be looked at closer and refined, but I don't see how that is really any different than making the nets bigger. Either way you are changing SOMETHING in an effort to increase scoring. I don't see why one would be acceptable and the other not.

Not really, yeah they limit the width of the pads, but not the heights or those extra flaps that help close the 5-hole when you go into the butterfly. The chest and shoulder protectors are out of control and the same with the gloves (again)

See this is what I don't understand. Increased scoring doesn't equal increased entertainment. The NHL could use soccer nets and we could have a 102-97 final score. Would people find that exciting?
I don't like the idea for two reasons. One, I'm a purest. Two, its not the solution to the problem.
They should REALLY crack down on all goalie pads including body armour. And really crack down on obstruction. That would make the game better. Taking the red line out is also an option.

couldn't have said it better myself.... leave the game alone... its fine... if anything regulate pad size, but don't get carried away...

I really like Bowmans idea.
The winningest coach in NHL history isn't completely sold on the idea either.
"That's not going to create more scoring chances," Scotty Bowman said from Sarasota, Fla. "Scoring chances are down because that's the way the game is played today. The players are bigger now, there's not as much room to move around. You watch old tapes, which I do quite a bit, it is a different game now."
Bowman's idea is to thin out the goal posts, perhaps using titanium or some other rigid metal that would stand the wear and tear. It would still be six-by-four but with more room on the inside.
"The present goal posts are about three inches in diameter," said Bowman. "If they reduce that to one inch, they would pick up two inches on each side."
Bowman pointed to a series of other factors that has changed the game, including the fact goalies wear bulkier equipment - not just pads - and there's little net to shoot at.

Anybody think he could some thing high up in the league if he wanted? Like some people think Gretzky could do the commish gig if Bettman gets fired, what about Scotty Bowman?
I think he should be in there somewhere. Maybe not as commish but the guy knows so much about the game you have to atleast ask him if he wants a job.
