View Full Version : niners dealing top pick?
just came across this...don't know if anyone has posted something similar.
if this goes down, the chargers would trade philip rivers to the niners for the #1 overall pick.
News
There are rumors of trade talks between the 49ers and Chargers involving the No. 1 overall pick in next month's draft, according to an ESPN website report. In exchange for giving up the first pick in the draft, the Niners would get quarterback Philip Rivers from the Chargers. Rivers, who was selected with the No. 4 overall pick and acquired by the Chargers in the Eli Manning trade, played a backup role last season due to the surprising success of starter Drew Brees.

It's hard to say whether this trade will come to fruition, but it makes sense for both clubs if the Niners feel that Rivers has more upside than rookie signal callers Alex Smith (Utah) and Aaron Rodgers (California). Meanwhile, the Chargers would gain the top pick in the draft which they could use to select a wide receiver such as Braylon Edwards (Michigan) or Mike Williams (USC). We'll continue to follow this potential story and keep you posted on all of trade rumors leading up to draft day.

That would eb good for both. The Chargers have no real need for Rivers since Brees finally got it together and don't need to pay that much for 2 QBs. But would the Chargers then trade down a couple picks instead of taking one of those WR at #1 to save a little money? They do need a young WR to compliment Brees, Gates and Tomlinson. That all hinges on if that trade would go down and IMO Rivers is better then any QB coming out this year.

could be bullshit, but rumors are usually just that. certainly nothing set in stone.
umm...quick update. just checked espn insider and they're preparing a mock in case of this exact trade. i'm guessing if those guys caught wind of it, it's not just bullshit. not saying espn knows all, but they do give rumors some credibility.

I guess I can understand this deal, but if we do trade this pick, we better get more than just Rivers. I think if Rivers were coming out this year, he would be the #1 pick, so it isnt a stretch, and he has at least one year under his belt of learning.
But we cant do this straight up, not necessarily getting SD's #1(that I would do in a heartbeat) but we would need a bit more compensation

Greg from Winter Park, FL: What would be the salary cap ramifications for the Chargers if they were to trade Phillip Rivers?
Vic: If they're going to do it, they'll have 10 days to get it done. Phillip Rivers is due a $6.625 option bonus on the 10th day of the league calendar year, March 11th. Interleague trading begins on March 2. Rivers has $6.375 million in remaining amortization. If the Chargers trade him before the option bonus deadline, they would realize a $6.375 million “dead money” hit and a $3.5 million increase on their 2005 cap. If they decide to keep him and pay the $6.625 million option bonus, then they will have $13 million in remaining amortization for a backup quarterback. At that point, it would become clear that Drew Brees would be the quarterback who would have to be traded.

Apparently the Chargers are in a financial mess regaurding Rivers. I don't see them trading him, and I don't see how they can afford to keep him on the bench.
This is too much brainwork.

In all honesty, I thought the Brees trade, rather than Rivers, made more sense from the beginning
