View Full Version : Why do we still use ESPN?
when we have so much better of a place here?
no errors.
no rejected posts or child/parent errors.
what is it about the way that that board flows that we like so much?
it doesn't make any friggin' sense.

more people. This is a place to go for single conversations. ESPN seems to handle multi-conversation better. The flat view helps a lot.
Two different types of boards, each with their own redeeming qualities.

I believe I read that there was a way to make this board have a flat view type of look.

As I just read in another post, you can put it in hybrid mode by:
Going to the display options on the toolbar right above the first post in this thread. And then select Hybrid mode. That is more of a flat view type of look.

Yeah, but it's still only in one topic. I'm talking about the format on the ESPN page where you can see every post made (flat view). It allows you to keep track of conversations easier, IMO.

Besides hybrid or threaded mode, the other way to keep track of the activity is to view the homepage. In the lower right corner, you can see the last 5 posts that have been made. In addition, on the User CP box, you can see any new posts since your last visit by clicking on that link (Or any new posts since you last clicked "Mark Forums Read").
Below that, you can also see who is online (Members and guests), and you can also see who is viewing each forum by going to the forum category pages. If people are viewing a forum, you'll see something like "(3 viewing)" next to the forum name.
Finally, the last way to see if people are present is to go to the bottom of the page. You can see which users are viewing a forum, and if you click a thread and go to the bottom, you can see what users are viewing the thread with you.

Yeah, I get all that, but I'm too lazy to go looking to see who's on, then to go look at the forums, etc. Not saying it's not effective, just saying it's the reason I'm not here as much as at ESPN.

The real test is how the moderators deal with trolls.
I dunno.
Theories .... I've had a few ... too few to mention ..

Yukon got a ban, if that helps.

Personally, I like the threaded view. I think it's easier to sort through the junk.
I think it's just the amount of activity on the ESPN boards that makes it more appealing.
But hell, if we all come here, there will be more traffic.

i just like espn because of the traffic... none of those fly-by-night message boards will ever gather enough following to be fun. This one may be the exception as it is growin by the minute.

I would like to alert you guys to a unique feature.
Go to your UserCP, and look for an option called "Buddy/Ignore List"
You can add users to your buddy list, but if there are trolls, you can add them to your "Ignore List". This list blocks their posts from appearing on your screen, and will be replaced with something along the lines of "You have chosen to ignore this user"

yeah, i really like this board, hopefully in the growing stages the posters are patient and willing to wait. i see sunday they had a record crowd on here for awhile.

That was because we were being indexed by a search engine. Freaked us out for a while since we didn't know what it was at first.

We might, I have no clue... Registration doesn't tell me if people found this site via search engine, unfortunately.

A feature that has been sorely missed on the ESPN boards and is still non-existant with their "upgrade"

Just my opinion, but a handy ignore feature is the left mouse button. If you don't want to read a post then don't push the button.

You're a better man than I. Most times I can fight the temptation to stoop to troll level, but occasionally I lose the battle. An ignore feature makes the battle much easier.

Not even close to being better. Have you seen how many arguments I get in?? Just saying that if you really want to ignore someone you will...eventually you'll get to the point to un-ignore them just because you're curious as to what they're saying.

You may be right. But there would exist that extra effort, a few moments to reconsider turning off the ignore before I got my boots mucked up in troll shyte.
I'm glad the option exists on these boards. I'll stick to these boards exclusively if the traffic keeps up.

Putting a troll on ignore is like trying to NOT slow down at a car accident. You know you shouldn't, you don't even really WANT to, but you do, just the same. You put a troll on ignore, sooner or later, you'll go back to un-ignore, just to see the twisted wreckage, even though you don't WANT to.
my 2 pennies, anyhow.
