Arizona Republic (registration required): "When it comes to naming his fifth starting pitcher, Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin is still pleading the fifth. At least for a day. Maybe two. Tops. Well, probably. Though all signs seemingly point to left-hander Brad Halsey winning the job and joining a rotation that includes Javier Vazquez, Russ Ortiz, lefty Shawn Estes and Brandon Webb, Melvin refuses to be swept into submission by endless speculation."

East Valley Tribune: "Manager Bob Melvin will not address Oscar Villarreal’s status until today, but it looks as if the battle for the Diamondbacks’ No. 5 starter is down to two candidates."
Vazquez nearly has perfect outing (http://www.azcentral.com/sports/special3/articles/0321dbnotes0321.html)
March 21
Arizona Republic (registration required): "It wasn't his best outing, but for 5 1/3 innings Sunday, Javier Vazquez was unhittable. Using his assortment of pitches and relying on an accurate fastball, Vazquez retired his first 16 batters before Seattle's Pokey Reese singled in the sixth. Not that the right-hander was thinking about a date with perfection, or even a no-hitter, for that matter."

March 21
Seattle Post-Intelligencer: "The Mariners faced their old manager's new team yesterday. Bob Melvin wasn't there, instead off directing another group of Arizona Diamondbacks in a split-squad Cactus League game in Yuma."
O'Neil, 93, savors each spring (http://www.azcentral.com/sports/special3/articles/0321cactushistory0321.html)
March 21
Arizona Republic (registration required): "There's something about spring training that keeps O'Neil young. This is his 70th consecutive spring training appearance. When he was a player and coach for the Negro League's Kansas City Monarchs from 1938-55, O'Neil helped the organization win five pennants and two Negro League World Series championships. As a major league scout, O'Neil got Ernie Banks and Lou Brock to sign their first pro major league contracts."
