ESPNNews reporting that they are close to an agreement and on saturday it will be a done deal. Is this good or bad? 25 game season is a little short in my view...

I think it's ridiculous. Bettman is a complete douche. I see why he's doing an about-face, though...if they don't play at all this season, Hockey takes a HUGE blow. They've already taken a huge blow, that's for sure, but it would be 10X's worse. The only problem is, whoever is this year's NHL "champion", they will always have an asterisk next to their championship because of it being such a short season.

what a fuckin joke, a 20-ish game 'season'??? suppose to be enough for a home-n-home within each conference.

i'm a wild fan...as far as i'm concerned, no devils? no flyers? no maple leafs? no lightning? etc...

fuck it, both sides have had months. they only shat themself when they realized they're putting their tv contracts in jeopardy.

give me minnesota high school hockey and i'll be happy. nhl, sorry, but go screw yourself.

Hot damn!

Rumours are everywhere. I love this, I really do, most interesting thing in hockey in all year.

So now the rumour is that the article saying the deal was done is completely false, but is that just a smoke screen? I think even if they do come up with a deal, they should just keep the season cancelled, playing a 20 game schedule would probably hurt the league even more and make the owners just look like they want that playoff money, not that the owners already look like crap.

I just hope they get something done before the draft.

Sure a 20 game season sucks.

I like the fact that some players in their possible last year will have the chance to skate going out. Not under great circumstances...but better at least.

Yzerman for one deserves better.

It usually takes teams 10 games to really get to know each other and play as a team. A 20 game season would be ridiculous. I wouldn't be surprised if the Wings don't make the playoffs.

Well if the NHL comes back this year and who ever wins the Cup will might be the only one that team will ever get.

A season this short isn't exactly what I like, but it's better than the alternative. With that short of a season the should load up really heavy on divisional games, I think that would be very exciting. It'll would be interesting though because with such a short season if a good team stumbles out of the gate they'll have a hard time making the playoffs. It would be intersting to see who makes the playoffs and who doesn't.

Why don't they just scrap the "season" and go to an Olympic style tournament? Give them a couple weeks to practice, maybe an exhibition or two, then go straight into the tournament. I think this would be much more exciting than a 20 game season.

great idea!

the other thing I thought of was to just say to hell with the playoffs, and make it like a 30-40 game exhebition type thing. or, since these assholes have had plenty of time off and all...cut the next offseason short. play 40 games and push back the playoffs.

somethin creative...cuz there is no way that anything they do should count as a season...no one deserves to be the Stanley Cup Champs this year...they can be the something else champs, but it would be heresy otherwise.

not 25 its 28.... the only games that will be played will be division games... so for the Flyers it'd be 7 vs devils, 7 vs rangers, 7 vs islanders, 7 vs penguins... then they will run a 16 team playoff from those standings...

Well at least the Stanley Cup will be awarded to someone, its just weird thinking about it not going to a team

MadNova

Here's what they should do.

Have a full training camp and preseason to keep players from getting hurt due to not being in shape.

Cancel the regular season.

Start the playoffs with every team eligible, seeding based on last year's standings.

This would cut out the pointless drivel and get right to the excitement, with the added bonus of potential Cinderella teams coming from the perennial bottomfeeders.

which is why there is NO WAY it should be awarded this year.

Lord Stanley's Cup has to be earned...you have to work your ass off over 82 games...fight through injuries, fatigue, etc. It would be a disgrace to anyone who is a TRUE fan to see this sacred trophy given away just to make some cash. If you wanted the cash, you shouldnt have gotten into a lockout in the first place.

Um, I think that would be cool as shit...that would really show the division champs...I'm not sure that's how it's going to go down though. I heard something about a home and home with every team in the conference. Did you find that somewhere online?

They did earn it.

And noone else should get it until they take it away from them. That's how championships work.

I like this idea. The whole concept of a shortened season (even worse than the last strike) is a sham. I can't get excited about divisional play only setting up the playoffs.

No one is following me here...whatsoever

PLAY THE FUCKING SEASON!!!!

thats what I want...i'll be glad to see some hockey.

but to essentially give away such a cherished trophy is pathetic...horrible...a disgrace.

Come up w/some other kind of "championship" for this year. This season is not earning it...there will be nowhere close to the same sacrafice made to get there...its just not the same.

again, play the season, but dont give away the cup just to make money.

That's just plain dumb, there is no reason to play a season if you aren't going to give the cup out.

then dont play it....

...i dont see how you can look at this as an actual season.

Obviously you dont recognize how special that Cup really is.

It's not a unknown trophy (like for the WS, NBA)...it's the most respected award in all of sports...well by those who are fans of REAL hockey.

I have a choice between no season and one season where the winner of the cup doesn't have to kill themselves for it, I'll take the second one. Matter of fact, its' not even close.

He's younger than quite a few players in the league. Probably younger than a flyer or two. I guess the fact that he missed the better part of 5 seasons during his career also helps.

The fact that they're having these talks and apparently making enough progress to revive the season pretty much means that both Bettman and Goodenow should be fired. Neither one is involved in the current talks. If either or both of them were the reason that a deal didn't happen earlier, they need to hit the bread line.

Exactly. He wouldn't be able to put food for his family on the table either. At least that was what it was about with his contract not being renegotiated. He's making a bundle in LA with his pimp shop. Hey where's PJ?
