That is a good pick up for them. They're definitely a team that isn't too deep and needs players who can contribute. With Shaq there, Laetner might have a pretty good season, if injuries don't hit him too hard. This move just makes things more interesting for the match up on Christmas Day :)

Does that mean that they have used up the veterans minimum that the would have used for Malone?

I think it does. Laetner signed for 1.1 mil. That probably means the Heat weren't very confident in getting Malone and had to use their exception. This probably means that SA, Minny, and LA are the teams currently still in the run for Malone. Of course, he still has to be healthy to play.

The impression I got from the LA Times article is that he will be able to play, just not real soon.

Yeah, I just found the link and read the article. Seems like he's going to miss part of the season as well. It all depends on how well he continues rehabilitating.
