A few more details on the Cliff Floyd to the Rangers thing (http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/baseball/rangers/stories/021105dnsporangbriefs.70e93.html) (reg req):

A club official said the team has had preliminary talks with the New York Mets about a trade for brittle outfielder Cliff Floyd, who could be the designated hitter. Floyd, 32, has missed more than 100 games because of injuries the last two years, but did have a 31-homer season for Florida in 2001. Any trade talks would probably center on how much of Floyd's salary the Mets are willing to eat. He's due $13.2 million over the next two seasons.

By the way, many of you are probably already familiar with it, but Bug Me Not (http://www.bugmenot.com/) is a wonderful website to help you bypass all these irritating newspaper registrations. It's got a login for just about everything.

As for Floyd, I still don't see him going anywhere. A trade with the Rangers would likely mean that the Mets would be getting an outfielder in return. From their depth chart (http://www.rotoworld.com/content/clubhouse_depthchart_MLB.asp?sport=MLB&leaguenum=&majteam=TEX#), Richard Hidalgo and David Dellucci aren't going anywhere and Alfonso Soriano isn't going to play the outfield. That leaves Kevin Mench and Laynce Nix. Mench had a breakout year last year but he's 27 already, a bit old for a youngster. Nix is 24 with tremendous power but shoddy plate discipline that did him in at the end of last season. Mench is a righty, Nix is a lefty. Here's what PECOTA projects for the two of them this year:

Kevin Mench .281/.350/.500, 17.2 VORP
Laynce Nix .277/.335/.476, 16.4 VORP

Pretty equivalent, pretty even with defense as well, both being slightly below average (but better than Floyd). But what should we expect from Cliff this year?

Cliff Floyd .270/.363/.476, 23.1 VORP

All three of these guys project to around 350 at bats. Floyd's projection, however, is based on injury risk while Nix and Mench are based on lack of playing time. So what's the bottom line here?

If we keep Floyd, he'll be a force in the lineup when he's healthy and better than either Mench or Nix. If we must pull a trigger on a deal, though, I'd take Nix based simply on 1) he's three years younger and 2) he's a lefty.

But, honestly, I think the Mets are a better team with Floyd (and Victor Diaz as backup).

I would love to get Nix or Mench for Floyd. Let them compete with Diaz for the spot. At we know there's a chance they could stay healthy for a full season!

yeah a lot of guys really want floyd out but i wouldnt mind having him and using diaz when he does down. however i would trade floyd away if in return we acquire a reputable reliever.
