Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Boston Red Sox third baseman Bill Mueller underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee earlier this week. The procedure was necessary after Mueller experienced swelling and discomfort during recent workouts.

Mueller is expected to return to full activity in approximately a month and should be ready for Opening Night at Yankee Stadium on April 3.

The 33-year-old Mueller was the 2003 American League batting champion after posting an average of .326 over 146 contests for the Red Sox. Last season for Boston, he played in 110 games and hit .283 with 12 homers and 57 runs batted in.

Mueller missed a portion of the 2004 campaign after having arthroscopic surgery performed on the same knee in late May.
