Jered Weaver
Feb. 9 - The Angels have until June 6 to sign Jered Weaver – their top draft pick last season (No. 12 overall) – before they lose his rights and he re-enters the draft, the Orange County Register reports. The team would prefer to act soon so Weaver can begin his pro career in the minor leagues in April.
Agent Scott Boras said Tuesday the sides have exchanged offers and counter offers in the past two weeks. "We're not seeking to make Jered the highest-paid college pitcher ever. We're seeking something under that," Boras told the newspaper. "We're seeking a bonus that places Jered in the upper echelon of talent." The $10.5 million bonus Cubs pitcher Mark Prior got coming out of USC in 2001 remains a record for college pitchers.
Weaver was unanimous choice as the best college pitcher in 2004, when he went 15-1 with a 1.65 ERA at Long Beach State. He and Florida State shortstop Stephen Drew (Diamondbacks) are the last unsigned first-round picks. The biggest bonus has gone to No.4 pick Jeff Niemann, a Rice pitcher, who got $5.2 million from the Devil Rays.
