Feb. 8 - The Pirates have asked the Athletics about left fielder Eric Byrnes, but it was not immediately known what Oakland would want in return, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. Byrnes, the subject of trade talks most of the winter, signed a one-year, $2.2 million contract on Feb. 4.
Byrnes' deal includes a $25,000 bonus if he's traded. If Byrnes makes 350 plate appearances, the deal jumps to $2.225 million, and if he notches 400 plate appearances, it will be worth $2.25 million total – the midpoint of the $2.5M Byrnes filed for and the $2M the A's countered with.
Byrnes, who turns 29 on Feb. 16, hit .283 with 20 home runs and 73 RBI in 143 games last season.
