BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Red Sox on Tuesday invited 16 non-roster players to major league spring training with the World Series champions, including former Toronto Blue Jays Simon Pond of North Vancouver, Dave Berg and left-hander Jason Kershner.
Pond, a third baseman who can also play the outfield, appeared in 16 games for the Blue Jays last season, hitting one homer with six RBIs. He also played for Canada at the Athens Olympics.
Berg, an infielder, has played seven major league seasons for the Marlins and Blue Jays. He hit .253 with three homers and 23 RBIs in 58 games with Toronto last season and has career marks of .269 with 21 home runs and 163 RBIs.
Boston also extended spring training invitations to: right-handers Scott Cassidy, Jack Cressend, Jeremi Gonzalez, Josias Manzanillo and Kris Wilson; catchers Jeff Bailey and Shawn Wooten; infielders Tim Hummel, Dave McCarty and Kenny Perez; and outfielders Chip Ambres, George Lombard and Billy McMillon.
