NHL VP Bill Daly reiterated he thinks the owners and players would meet again this week. "Yes, I believe we will be meeting with the union again before the end of the week. As nothing is scheduled at this time, I don't know when or where, nor do I know who will be attending. We are hoping to hear back from the union soon," Daly said. "We feel that what we laid out on Thursday night could form the basis of a new agreement. But I'm not sure the union shares that view."

NHLPA senior director Ted Saskin said, "Bill knows that the concepts they discussed with us on Thursday would not form the basis for an agreement, so he should not be surprised that he hasn't heard from us. We were very clear on Thursday that we would not be negotiating over his proposed concepts."

There was no communication between the two sides Monday at all.

If the union won't respond, citing "philosophical differences" with the apparently odious notions NHL negotiators put forward last week, the league probably has three choices, listed here in order of least passive to most aggressive: One, keep waiting. Two, give the union a drop-dead date. Three, release all the details of its last, best offer publicly and see if that will incite the players to pressure their executive committee to hold a vote.

There continued to be whispers last night that the league still plans to make a formal offer this week based on its ideas from last Thursday.

Gormer Canucks GM Brian Burke says the NHL has sent out a memo to its 30 clubs outlining concepts it plans to take into the next set of negotiations. Those meetings are expected this week, and Burke said the NHL will discuss a luxury tax -- something it steadfastly refused in the past -- and a profit-sharing provision that would see the two sides split money 50-50 after the league reached a certain profit threshold.

There remain whispers that the league may never actually cancel the season, but once again Daly said the league would likely cancel the season when it's obvious games can't be played: "No promises, but I do believe that, yes."
