Interested - Cubs, Diamondbacks, Devil Rays, Pirates, Astros

Jan. 30 - With Sammy Sosa apparently headed to Baltimore, the Cubs are stepping up their efforts to land Jeromy Burnitz as their everyday right-fielder, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. That could take the Pirates out of the running for Burnitz.

Chicago would free up $7.8 million in salary by trading Sosa, some of which could be used to ink Burnitz, who is eyeing about $5 million annually. The Pirates' offer was in the $4 million range, plus Burnitz hopes to play for a contender right away.

The Diamondbacks have taken a serious look at Burnitz as a CF solution, reported Insider's Jerry Crasnick. Arizona GM Joe Garagiola, who has also been involved in trade talks for Oakland's Eric Byrnes and the Mets' Mike Cameron, spoke twice recently with Burnitz's agent, Howard Simon.

Burnitz, who spent last season with the Rockies, helped make his case by hitting .339 with five homers and 18 RBI in 59 at-bats against Arizona. New Diamondbacks shortstop Royce Clayton also gave a positive scouting report (after being teammates in Colorado).
