The Globe's Gordon Edes (http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2005/01/27/red_sox_are_set_at_first/)points out that with the Doug Mientkiewicz to the Mets trade (http://www.masslive.com/sportsflash/baseball/index.ssf?/base/sports-9/1106812729305000.xml&storylist=baseball)all of the players acquired when Nomar Garciaparra was shipped out of Boston last summer are now gone.

Orlando Cabrera signed a free agent deal with Anaheim. Dave Roberts was traded to San Diego for Ramon Vazquez and Jay Payton. And now Mientkiewicz ia a Met, in exchange for first base prospect Ian Bladergroen.
The constant turnover in the modern game is amazing. As a fan I've grown accumstomed to it, but sometimes it hits home more than others. The Sox trade away a franchise cornerstone in Garciaparra, and months later every one of those players has left town. Remarkable.
The good news for Sox fans is the Nomar trade helped Boston win its first World Championship in 86 years. I'll take it.
The Boston roster now appears nearly set with the first base situation cleared up. Kevin Millar will return to full-time duty at first, something he's excited about.
"I didn't want to go anywhere else. I feel like I've been with the Red Sox for the last 10 years, even though it's only been two. I feel like a part of the city and part of the organization," Millar said.
..."We're going to have a healthy Trot Nixon, who's going to be hungry. Johnny Damon is in his last year, Billy Mueller is healthy, [Mark] Bellhorn is back with the confidence he had last year, Manny [Ramirez] and David [Ortiz], Jason [Varitek], and [Curt] Schilling . . . we have almost everybody back but the shortstop. And wait till you see Edgar Renteria.
"I think we're going to be a great, great team with a chance to do something special. I'm just glad I'm still a part of it."
