Omar certainly won't be tempted anymore, now that Sammy Sosa is in Baltimore (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1978241):
Chicago Cubs outfielder Sammy Sosa will be traded to the Baltimore Orioles for infielder Jerry Hairston and at least two minor-leaguers, pending physicals and approval from commissioner Bud Selig and the players' association. An Orioles source told ESPN's Tim Kurkjian that the only way the trade will not happen is if someone fails a physical.
Yeah, the physicals all still have to be passed but I can't imagine this deal not getting done. And now we can all breathe a big sigh of relief. Hooray!
• Adam Rubin has a vertiable cornucopia of news tidbits (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/story/275819p-236243c.html) today:
• The Mets will likely only go with six relievers and Orber Moreno is out of options.
• Contrary to yesterday's report, Mike Cameron may be on track to make the season opener on April 4th. He's been cleared for everything except swinging a bat at full speed. While this is good news, I kinda did want to see Victor Diaz get a couple weeks of playing time. We'll see...
• The Mets signed LHP Mike Matthews to a minor-league contract.
• This is interesting from Adam too:
The Mets are skeptical their offer to Carlos Delgado exceeded the Marlins' bid by only $30,000, as agent David Sloane proclaimed, and are anxiously awaiting a look at the contract to do their own computation. They also are interested to see if Delgado actually will spend all four years of the backloaded contract as a Marlin, since Delgado didn't get any no-trade protection and is making only $4 million this year. The Mets were willing to offer a limited no-trade clause and $6 million signing bonus.
Sloane is a new agent and the Mets could seriously screw with his future in MLB if they determined he steered his client to the Marlins despite having a more lucrative contract on the table. Don't the Mets have a couple player union reps in their dugout?
