John Van Benschoten
Pirates
Jan. 27 - Right-hander John Van Benschoten had arthroscopic surgery Thursday in Birmingham, Ala., to repair a slight tear of the posterior labrum and remove a cyst in his throwing shoulder, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Noted orthopedist Dr. James Andrews performed the operation. The timetable for a return to pitching is 10-12 months.
"It's very disappointing," Van Benschoten told the newspaper. "Obviously, this was the year I wanted to make a name for myself, establish myself as a major-leaguer. But I'm just 24. A year is nothing for me right now. I'm just going to have to be patient and do things the right way to get back."
Van Benschoten, the Pirates' first-round draft pick in 2001, was 1-3 with a 6.91 ERA last season after being promoted from Triple-A Nashville in August.
