Jan. 21 - The Timberwolves might wind up keeping Sprewell the remainder of the season because team owner Glen Taylor wants to make sure he's not stuck with excessive salary.

After paying $17 million in luxury taxes last season for being over the NBA's salary cap, Taylor indicates that Timberwolves will not trade possible free agent Sprewell this season unless the offer is irresistable.

Teams seeking Sprewell for his expiring contract ($14.6 million this season) and possible salary cap relief would probably send the Timberwolves a financial burden by comparison, and Taylor wants no part of that.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports Taylor would like to re-sign Sprewell, but not at his current salary.

The Heat denied a report on TNT that they're working on a four-team trade to bring Sprewell to South Florida, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

The reported deal would send Eddie Jones to Minnesota, which also would receive Donyell Marshall from the Raptors. Toronto would receive Penny Hardaway from the Knicks, who would get Jalen Rose from Toronto. It's unclear whether the deal would work under the salary cap.
Sprewell is eligible for free agency after this season. The Timberwolves reportedly have offered a three-year extension for somewhere between $21 million and $27 million, but Sprewell earlier this season said he was "insulted" at the suggestion he take such a cut from his current $14.6 milion salary.
