Nationals GM Jim Bowden said team officials held a conference call with infielder Barry Larkin this week. Larkin, 40, hasn't decided if he'll return for a 20th season in the majors. "If he does play, I think we have as good a chance as any at signing him," Bowden said.

It would give us a shortstop, yes, but recent reports say we aren't too interested.
With no team offering a starting job at shortstop, free agent Barry Larkin may opt for retirement.
"Unless somebody convinces him in strong fashion, I think the likelihood is that he will not play," agent Eric Goldschmidt said yesterday. Several teams would be interested in Larkin as a utilityman, the Nationals especially. However, it currently appears that he'll choose to quit unless he can find a team willing to give him 100 starts at shortstop. Maybe Rickey can make a recruiting call for Newark. Jan. 20 - 3:17 am et

Barry Larkin is also interested in a front-office or organizational job with his next team. It is one thing to expect any team to extend him 100 starts at shortstop, without adding future expectations.
There's some interest - I would call it limited - in Larkin on the part of the Detroit Tigers. Larkin attended the U. of Mich, you may recall. The Tigers would maybe be willing to see if Larkin could provide some depth at short and third (although Larkin seems to have no interest in the hot corner). I don't expect anything to come of this.
It could very well be that Larkin has reached the end of the line, or at least may have to wait for the Injury Bug to bite somebody before his phone rings.
