anybody else think he's going to overtake chatman for the 5th spot. now before you say "but leme, chatman has been rock solid so far in camp", let me say chatman is 5'9 and always has been a questionable OUTDOOR wr and we could have ford or someone else return punts.

In the past, when we said "we can just have so and so return punts" it didn't work out for us. If Chatman is showing he can field and return punts well, I say keep him. If we keep 6 receivers, fine, otherwise it's a fight between Ford and Vines, IMO.

hmmm, interesting, now that you put it that way i hope we do keep 6 wr's but what other position do we slice a spot from, o-line, rob davis?

Who else would snap?? Ruegamer?? Wells??
I would say snatch from the OL, but that's only because I think there are guys that can play multiple positions on the line, but I'm not about to say who should be axed. It will be interesting. I don't they'll keep 5 WRs, and I think Vines or Ford will either be on the practice squad or released.
Unless they decided they could do with 1 less DB. Roman is pretty flexible, and could play either corner or safety...

i heard wells is outplaying ruegamer for a backup spot on the line, i know there is a lot of pre season left and i guess injuries in the next 4 weeks will determine what we do position wise.
chatman's never really been too impressive as a punt returner but he isn't a sieve either. tough call.
vines looks like he has pretty soft hands too.
We keep saying that Chatman is going to be overtaken for that punt and kick returning spot. But how many challengers has he beat out?
DeAnderw Rubin
Brian McDonald
Gari Scott
Scotty Vines
Carl Ford
Reggie Swinton
This training cmap, he getting the kitchen sink thrown at him:
Kelvin Kight
Shockmain Davis
Jamal Jones

Jamal JonesI'm all for the competition. May the best man win. If Chat survives so be it, he definitely has the inside track since he knows the system, has caught balls as the #3 and #4 and has been protecting the ball on punts.
I'd really like to see us improve our return game but someone has to prove they can take care of the ball and outperform Chat. They have to gain the coache's trust, I know Sherman's not going to take any chances and risk going back to the punt returning woes from a couple years ago. I think that scarred him pretty good (me too) so he'd really have to trust a guy and see him perfom consistently before he pulls return duties from Chat.
But hey, if someone can prove they can do it, I'm all for it. We should have an extra spot on the roster with only having one punter. So maybe we can keep a 5th WR. But I think we're going to have a ton of young Dline and DB's between this year's draft and guys who have something to prove from the last couple of drafts. I wouldn't be surprised if they go with 4 WR's to give them extra room for all those defensive guys, and have enuff Oline guys, and throw a promising WR on the practice squad like a Kight, Vines, Ford etc. or whomever's eligible and they feel could step up during the season because of injury.
If our defense was as bad as our return game, we'd be set.
