The New York Jets (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=nyj) and Cincinnati Bengals (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=cin) have agreed to terms on a trade that would send defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6340) to the Bengals in exchange for Cincinnati's fourth- and fifth-round picks (Nos. 114 and 151) in the upcoming draft, according to league sources.

Completion of the trade is contingent upon Robertson agreeing to a new contract -- he had two years remaining on his rookie deal with New York -- and passing a physical, though neither is expected to hold up the deal, which could be finalized as early as Monday.

On Friday the Bengals had a deal in place to acquire Lions defensive tackle Shaun Rogers (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5508) in exchange for third- and fifth-round picks, but that trade fell through when it did not meet league approval. The Lions then traded Rogers to the Bengals' in-state rivals, the Browns, for a third rounder and cornerback Leigh Bodden (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6616).

In Robertson, 26, the Bengals, hoping to improve a defense that has ranked higher than 27th in yards allowed once in the past five seasons, will get a player who isn't as big or as dominant as Rogers has been in his first five season. But Robertson is just as hungry for a fresh start. Robertson, 6-foot-1 and 310 pounds, should be a better fit as a penetrating "3-technique" tackle in Cincinnati's 4-3 scheme than he had been in the Jets' 3-4 the past two years.

3/4: The New York Jets tried to unload the underachieving Dewayne Robertson on the Cincinnati Bengals, but a tentative trade fell through partly because the nose tackle has a bone-on-bone condition in his knee, according to the Daily News (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/2008/03/03/2008-03-03_jets_stay_busy_by_signing_lb_calvin_pace.html). The Bengals had agreed to send fourth- and fifth-round picks in the upcoming draft to the Jets, contingent on Robertson signing a new contract and passing a physical. It appears he couldn't pass the physical, and there were other reports that the two sides couldn't agree on a contract extension.

3/7: Head coach Marvin Lewis has indicated that a deal for New York defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson remains a possibility, according to Pro Football Weekly (http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/The+Way+We+Hear+It/default.htm?mode=afcnorth). The club is expected to target the interior defensive line during the draft, but may still want to acquire a veteran after the trade for Shaun Rogers collapsed. The trade for Robertson hit a snag when the two sides couldn’t agree on a restructured contract.
