Bradenton, FL (Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Pirates made it official Sunday and signed pitcher Byung-Hyun Kim to a one-year contract.
Financial terms of the deal were not released. Reports of the pact first surfaced on Wednesday.
"Byung-Hyun Kim is a veteran right-handed pitcher who has pitched, and wants to again pitch, late in games out of the bullpen," said Pirates general manager Neal Huntington in a release. "Byung-Hyun will compete to earn a role on our club as a reliever and he adds an experienced option for us in our bullpen competition."
Kim, who was also being courted by the San Francisco Giants, pitched for three teams last season, going 10-8 with a 6.08 earned run average in 28 games for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Florida Marlins and Colorado Rockies. He was 8-7 in 22 starts, and also struck out 107 batters in 118 1/3 frames.
Over the course of nine seasons and 394 games, including 87 starts, with the Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox, Rockies, and Marlins, the 29-year-old South Korean sidewinder is 54-60 with 86 saves.
His best season came in 2002 with Arizona, as he went 8-3 with 36 saves and a 2.04 ERA in 72 games. To open a spot on the 40-man roster for Kim, the Pirates designated infielder Ray Olmedo for assignment.
