The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced that Lou Frazier has been named First Base Coach, thus completing their Major League coaching staff for 2008. The announcement was made by Pirates Senior Vice President, General Manager Neal Huntington and Field Manager John Russell.
Frazier, 42, spent the last four years as the Boston Red Sox Minor League Outfield and Baserunning Coordinator after spending the 2003 season as the hitting coach for the Cleveland Indians' Single-A Kinston club. He began his coaching career in 2000 with Columbus, the Indians' affiliate in the South Atlantic League.
A switch-hitting outfielder during his playing days, Frazier was originally selected by Houston in the first round (fifth player overall) of the 1986 draft. He made his major league debut with Montreal in 1993 and went on to play five seasons in the big leagues with the Expos (1993-95), Rangers (1995-96) and White Sox (1998). Frazier played in 302 major league games and hit .255 with 46 RBI and 58 stolen bases. He swiped 465 bases during his 12 seasons in the minor leagues, which included a Pacific Coast League leading 42 with Calgary in 1998. "John and I are extremely pleased to complete the Major League coaching staff," said Huntington. "Each individual is a quality communicator, instructor and person with a broad set of experiences and abilities. As a staff they complement each other well and will play a significant role in changing the culture in our clubhouse while restoring the sense of pride in being a Pittsburgh Pirate."
