PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Joey Porter (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/4723/), the vocal pass-rushing linebacker, was released by the Pittsburgh Steelers (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/pit/) on Thursday.
The 29-year-old Porter, who was in the final year of his contract, had been the starting right outside linebacker since 2000, the year after he was drafted by the Steelers.

Porter was to receive a $1 million bonus on March 6, and was due to earn $4 million in 2007.
"It's a business decision that was made," Steelers spokesman Dave Lockett said.
Porter played 122 games and made 106 starts. His 60 quarterback sacks rank fourth in team history. The Steelers also released injured running back Verron Haynes (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6053/) and offensive tackle Ulish Booker (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/7654/), who spent the 2006 season on the reserve/injured list

Sad to see him go. But, I thought Harrison was ready to be a starter two years ago. It will be good to see him get a shot.

I agree that it will be sad to see him go but he wanted more money than the Steelers thought that he was worth.

I know that he was a defensive leader on the team but i think that someone else will step up and take over his leadership position. Although you have to remember that he really wasn't that great last year and the year before he turned it on only once we got to the playoffs.

I think that Miami over paid him with the signing bonus of 12 million and the guranteed money of 8 million.

Plus on our side we have to think about signing Big Ben and Troy and some other guys in the future... I agree that Harrison is ready to take the job but with losing Porter we are not very deep at the linebacker position now, so if Harrison goes down we might have a few problems... I also think that Haggans and Farrior aren't getting any younger and we need to think about the future in that respect as well.

I think that we will be ok though if we draft well this year and don't take a lot of injuries.
