Based on what I'm hearing from ESPN.com, Cowher's days in Pittsburgh are all but absolutely done. Looks like he's supposed to be announcing his resignation by the eighth of January or so. If he is actaully going to leave, I will be very sad to see him go. With maybe the exception of Holmgren for somewhat obvious reasons, I respect and admire no other contemporary coach in the NFL more than Cowher. He is absolutely the best, IMO. Also, if he leaves, I wonder what he'll do? If he would look to get back into coaching in a year or two, it would be so cool to see him land in Green Bay. I swear, Cowher is the reincarnation of Lombardi himself.
No matter what happens with Mr. Cohwer, I will only wish him the best. I will most definitely miss him on the sidelines.

funny that you mention Holmgren. all Cowher wants is money around what Holmgren makes, that being around 8M a year.
Holmgren 15 years
157-102 and 1 SB win.
Cowher 15 years
161-99 and 1 SB win.

This is true. They had 2 guys on their staff that could easily step up and be head coaches.
Welcome aboard

Thanks so what are you guys thoughts? They interviewed Rivera, obviously Whisenhunt and Grimm are candidates as well. I'd be happy with any of them and I trust the Rooney's judgement.

I know I wanted the Lions to hire Grimm last year. As successfull as cowher has been as a coach and the way he has groomed others to be successfull, I don't think it makes sense to hire from outside the organization.
Its not like the steelers aren't going in the right direction recently..ala the raiders who have rumors of promoting from within.

I think it doesn't matter who they hire, the Browns are winning that division next year.
I have more fabulous thoughts, if you'd like them.

both Noll and Cowher came from outside the Organization.
I just hope they exhaust all avenues to find the next HC of the team.

Nobody had even heard of Cowher before the Steelers hired him.
Of course this has to have anyone even being considered for the job just drooling. The Rooney family has a great track record of being loyal to the head coach and most of us have only known 2 coaches in our lives....Cowher and Noll. Any coach getting hired knows they don't have to win Super Bowls to stay on, just give the team a chance to win them. The Rooneys know that if you keep a competitive team on the field sooner or later the championship will come.

Yea there is no doubt in my mind that whoever they hire, the Steelers will have a competitive team and will contend almsot every year.

That is because ownership will give them every opportunty to succeed. They don't meddle in the football operations too much other than the hiring of a new coach and some other management decisions.

Whisenhunt gone...which I think tells us that I am pretty sure they want another defensive minded coach. I am starting to believe in my heart it will be Rivera. He fits the mold of Cowher so not much will change.

as it stands right now.....I have no clue as to who they want.
They will wait till Rivera is finished with his season before making a decision.

Looks like they went defensive minded but not Rivera. Will Rivera get the Dallas job? I think Dallas will want an experienced coach with a big name.

So what do the Steeler fans think of their new coach Tomlin?

I love the hiring. Would have been happy with any of the 3 finalists. The only thing that concerns me is that Tomlin is a 4-3 defense guy and the Steelers are manned for 3-4 that allows the LBs and Safeties to run around and make most of the plays. This could either mean Tomlin changes his thinking once he sees the 3-4 in action under Lebeau or the Steelers could have a 1 - 2 year growing pain on defense until they get more defensive linemen (rush ends) into place to man a 4-3 scheme.

I heard LeBeau is staying so I assume so is the 3-4

Dick is staying. That was great news. Losing Whisenhunt and Grimm will be tough and Tomlin will probably want to look at some assistants he has worked with before. I have great confidence the team will be in good shape for a while.

As long as LeBeau and the 3-4 are staying, I'm happy with this. Would have really preferred Whisenhunt, but this should work out.
